Pancreatic Tissue Digestion

Pancreatic tissue digestion is a laboratory process that breaks down the pancreas into individual cells or small tissue fragments for analysis and culture. It typically uses enzymatic digestion, often with collagenase, to degrade extracellular matrix proteins, followed by gentle mechanical dissociation that separates exocrine cells, endocrine cells, and supporting tissue while preserving cell viability. Researchers use the resulting cell preparations to study pancreatic structure and function, isolate insulin-producing islets, establish organoids, and investigate diabetes, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cancer. Careful control of enzyme concentration, exposure time, temperature, and mechanical force is essential for obtaining representative, viable cells suitable for downstream medical research.
