Pig Coronary Model

The pig coronary model is a preclinical research system that uses porcine coronary anatomy and cardiovascular physiology to study heart disease, interventions, and tissue responses. Because pigs have coronary vessels, cardiac structure, and blood-flow patterns relevant to humans, researchers can reproduce conditions such as vessel narrowing, arterial occlusion, and myocardial ischemia through controlled experimental procedures. This model supports evaluation of stents, catheters, surgical techniques, imaging methods, and cardiovascular drugs before clinical testing. It also helps investigators examine coronary disease mechanisms and treatment outcomes in a living system, strengthening translational research in medicine.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Administration of medications, experimental drugs, and other test substances in pigs requires an appropriate route based on study objectives, compound properties, and animal welfare considerations. Noninvasive delivery through...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood collection is a common procedure in swine research and clinical studies. The choice of sampling site depends on the animal's age, body size, the volume of blood required, the study objectives and approved IACUC...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Pigs are commonly used in biomedical and surgical research because of their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans. During procedures, anesthesia prevents pain, reduces stress, limits movement, and supports animal...

This protocol describes the porcine myocardial infarction (MI) model using a 90 min closed-chest coronary balloon occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (LAD), followed by reperfusion. Furthermore, the protocol for several outcome parameters, such as cardiac function, hemodynamics, microvascular resistance, and infarct size, are also presented.
