Portal Circulation Delivery

Portal circulation delivery refers to transporting absorbed substances, medications, or therapeutic agents through the portal venous system to the liver before they enter systemic circulation. Blood from the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and spleen flows through the portal vein, allowing hepatic sinusoids and liver cells to process nutrients, metabolize compounds, and regulate exposure through first-pass metabolism. In medicine, this pathway influences oral drug bioavailability, liver-targeted therapy, and the distribution of substances absorbed from the intestine. Understanding portal circulation delivery helps researchers predict pharmacokinetics, assess hepatic clearance, and design treatments that either use or bypass the liver’s filtering function.

2012

A technique for isolating portal fibroblasts from rat liver is described. Livers are perfused and digested in situ with collagenase, followed by ex vivo digestion of the liver slurry and size selection of cells. This method provides a pure population of portal fibroblasts without the need for passage in culture.

Portal Hypertension

2026

Portal hypertension is an increase in blood pressure within the portal venous system. Normally, this pressure is less than 5 mmHg. It is considered clinically significant when it rises above 10 mmHg. At this threshold, complications from altered blood flow and venous congestion emerge.EtiologyPortal hypertension arises from conditions that impede blood flow through the liver. The most common cause is cirrhosis, in which chronic liver injury leads to fibrotic scarring. This fibrosis narrows or...

Hepatic Portal System

The hepatic portal system, a critical part of our circulatory framework, transports nutrient-laden, deoxygenated blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the liver. This ingenious system plays an indispensable role in maintaining our body's metabolic equilibrium. At its core, the hepatic portal vein is the result of a confluence of the superior and inferior mesenteric veins along with the splenic vein. Each of these veins has a unique role. The superior mesenteric vein is responsible...
