Preoperative Templating

Preoperative templating is the systematic planning of a surgical procedure before the operation, using patient anatomy and imaging to anticipate technical requirements and improve decision-making. In orthopedic surgery, clinicians analyze radiographs or other imaging with digital or physical templates to estimate implant size, alignment, component position, and the correction needed for the affected anatomy. This process helps surgeons select appropriate implants, recognize anatomical challenges, prepare alternatives, and communicate operative goals with the surgical team. By supporting more predictable reconstruction and efficient intraoperative execution, preoperative templating contributes to patient-specific care, particularly in joint replacement and complex fracture management.

DNA as a Genetic Template

2020

Two structural features of the DNA molecule provide a basis for the mechanisms of heredity: the four nucleotide bases and its double-stranded nature. The Watson-Crick model of double-helical DNA structure, proposed in 1952, drew heavily upon the X-ray crystallography work of researchers Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work in 1962. Franklin was, controversially, excluded from the prize for...

Preoperational Thought IV: Numbers

2026

Piaget’s preoperational stage, from about ages 2 to 7, is characterized by rapid growth in symbolic thinking. Children increasingly use words, images, and objects to represent ideas, although their reasoning remains largely intuitive. During this period, number sense develops from memorized counting toward an understanding of quantity and basic arithmetic.Counting and CardinalityChildren younger than age 3 may recite number words without fully understanding their numerical meaning. During the...

Preoperational Thought I: The Symbolic Function

Jean Piaget’s preoperational stage of cognitive development spans approximately ages 2 to 7. During this period, children increasingly think symbolically but are not yet able to perform logical mental operations consistently. Symbols are words, pictures, numbers, or objects that stand for something else. For example, the word "dog" can represent an entire category of animals, even when no dog is physically present. This ability allows children to mentally represent people, objects, and events...

Water-in-oil droplet assays are useful for analytical chemistry, enzyme evolution, and single cell analysis, but typically require microfluidics to form the droplets. Here, we describe particle templated emulsification, a microfluidic-free approach to perform droplet assays.
