Cell Biodistribution

Cell biodistribution is the study of where administered cells travel, accumulate, persist, and are cleared throughout the body, making it essential for evaluating the safety and effectiveness of cell-based medicines. After administration, cells encounter tissue barriers, blood flow, adhesion molecules, chemokine signals, and immune surveillance that influence their migration, homing, retention, and clearance; researchers measure these patterns using labeling and imaging or tissue-based analyses. In medicine, biodistribution studies help determine whether therapeutic cells reach intended targets, identify off-target accumulation, optimize delivery routes and dosing, and assess risks such as unwanted tissue effects. This information supports the development and regulatory evaluation of regenerative, immune, and gene-modified cell therapies.

Source: Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti and Sina Shahbazmohamadi, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut Nanoparticles have been increasingly used research towards targeted drug delivery and controlled drug release. While most of these particles have been developed as polymeric or liposomal particles because of their biocompatibility, there is a trend in current research toward the use of metallic and magnetic nanoparticles. These metallic nanoparticles...

An In Vivo Immunofluorescence Localization Method to Study Antibody Biodistribution

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo immunofluorescence localization (IVIL) technique to study the biodistribution of tumor-targeting antibodies in a murine model of breast cancer. Upon the intravenous injection of a tumor-specific antibody in the mouse, the tumor is surgically isolated, and the localization of the antibody within the tumor tissue is confirmed via ex vivo immunostaining.

Acute and Chronic Models of Hyperglycemia in Zebrafish: A Method to Assess the Impact of Hyperglycemia on Neurogenesis and the Biodistribution of Radiolabeled Molecules

2017

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.
