Psychophysical Measurement

Psychophysical measurement is the systematic study of how physical stimuli, such as light, sound, pressure, or temperature, relate to perceived sensory responses, making subjective experience measurable. In controlled experiments, researchers vary stimulus intensity or timing and record detection, discrimination, or rating responses to estimate thresholds and construct psychometric functions. In medicine, these methods support vision and hearing assessment, pain evaluation, sensory and neurological testing, and monitoring of treatment-related changes. By linking behavioral responses to measurable stimulus properties, psychophysical measurement helps characterize sensory dysfunction, refine clinical assessments, and evaluate how disease or therapy affects perception.

Sweet taste has powerful hedonic appeal among people of all ages, particularly children. Described herein is a reliable and valid method that can be used to determine the level of sweetness most preferred, making it a valuable psychophysical tool for scientists.

Psychophysically-anchored, Robust Thresholding in Studying Pain-related Lateralization of Oscillatory Prestimulus Activity

Psychophysical methods such as the QUEST estimation procedure can efficiently yield robust estimates of the stimulation intensity at which nonpainful sensations transition into painful sensations. By stimulating repeatedly at the threshold intensity, the variability in rating responses can directly be attributed to perceptual classifications in subsequent analyses.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of the visual cortex that is often accompanied by strong suppression of one eye. We present a new technique for measuring and treating interocular suppression in patients with amblyopia that can be deployed using virtual reality goggles or a portable iPod Touch device.

Psychophysical tools measure the functionality of the taste system for both research and health assessment purposes. This paper describes a method to measure taste detection thresholds that can determine the lowest concentration of sucrose, sodium chloride, or monosodium glutamate that can be tasted by individuals as young as 6 years.
