Radiation Therapy Protocol

A radiation therapy protocol is a structured plan that specifies how ionizing radiation will be used to treat disease, including treatment goals, dose, timing, and delivery technique. It works by directing radiation at targeted tissue, where energy-induced DNA damage prevents cancer cells from reproducing; treatment is often divided into fractions to allow healthy tissue time to recover. In medicine, protocols guide the safe and consistent use of external-beam radiation, brachytherapy, and combined treatment approaches. Careful planning and imaging help balance tumor control with protection of nearby organs, supporting personalized care, treatment evaluation, and improved clinical outcomes.

2015

Stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SBRT) involves the precise delivery of high-dose radiation to cancer tumor targets. A novel SBRT platform offers a first-of-its-kind gimbaled radiation accelerator mounted within a pivoting O-ring gantry capable of dynamic image-guided tumor tracking. Here, we describe dynamic tumor tracking for lung targets.

Biological Effects of Radiation

2020

All radioactive nuclides emit high-energy particles or electromagnetic waves. When this radiation encounters living cells, it can cause heating, break chemical bonds, or ionize molecules. The most serious biological damage results when these radioactive emissions fragment or ionize molecules. For example, α and β particles emitted from nuclear decay reactions possess much higher energies than ordinary chemical bond energies. When these particles strike and penetrate matter, they produce ions...

Research on ionizing radiation (IR)-induced clonogenic cell death is important for understanding the effects of IR on malignant tumors and normal tissues. Here, we describe a one-step assay for assessing the major modes of IR-induced clonogenic cell death based on morphology of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI)-stained nuclei visualized by fluorescence microscopy.
