Sample Annotation

Sample annotation is the systematic process of labeling biological or clinical specimens with descriptive information, making samples understandable, traceable, and suitable for analysis. It links each sample to standardized metadata such as patient or specimen identifiers, collection time, tissue type, treatment status, and observed features, often through controlled vocabularies or structured databases. In medicine, accurate annotation supports biobanking, pathology, clinical research, and the organization of genomic or imaging datasets. Consistent annotations improve quality control, enable comparisons across studies, and help researchers develop reliable diagnostic methods, predictive models, and evidence-based treatments.

Genome Annotation and Assembly

2021

The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.
