Tongue Tissue Imaging

Tongue tissue imaging is the medical visualization of the tongue’s layers, surface features, blood supply, and pathological changes, supporting evaluation when examination alone is insufficient. Imaging systems generate contrast from differences in tissue properties, such as light absorption and scattering, acoustic echoes, or radiographic attenuation, and convert these signals into anatomical or functional images. In medicine, these images can help characterize ulcers, masses, vascular abnormalities, inflammation, and treatment-related changes, while guiding biopsy planning and monitoring response to therapy. By linking visible tissue features with underlying structure, tongue tissue imaging strengthens noninvasive assessment and supports earlier, more precise management of oral disease.

The human tongue is a fascinating and complex organ, responsible for various essential functions such as swallowing, speech, and taste. It is also subject to various conditions and diseases. In this article, we delve into the anatomy of the tongue, its roles, and some common conditions that can affect it. Anatomical Position in the Oral Cavity The tongue is located within the oral cavity, also known as the mouth. It is attached to the floor of the mouth by a fold of mucous membrane called the...

This video demonstrates the preparation of the murine tongue extracellular matrix by using the decellularization method, which involves exposing the harvested tongue to a series of physical, chemical, and enzymatic treatments. The resulting TEM scaffold retains its native extracellular matrix composition, removing the cellular components.

Knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying gustatory transduction has recently enjoyed significant advances, largely due to using animal models. However, the wide diversity in taste sensitivity and specificity among mammals warrants studies in human tissue. We describe a biopsy technique to collect living taste cells from the papillae on human tongue.
