Transesophageal Pacing

Transesophageal pacing is a temporary cardiac pacing technique that delivers electrical stimulation through an electrode placed in the esophagus, which lies close to the atria and posterior heart. Controlled pulses pass through the esophageal wall to depolarize nearby cardiac tissue, allowing atrial capture and, in some settings, ventricular capture without placing an intracardiac catheter. In medicine, the method supports evaluation of cardiac conduction, assessment of sinus node and atrioventricular function, termination of selected supraventricular tachyarrhythmias through overdrive pacing, and short-term support for certain bradyarrhythmias when conventional pacing is impractical. Its minimally invasive design makes it useful in monitored clinical and electrophysiology settings.

Noninvasive Determination of Vortex Formation Time Using Transesophageal Echocardiography During Cardiac Surgery

2018

We describe a protocol to measure vortex formation time, an index of left ventricular filling efficiency, using standard transesophageal echocardiography techniques in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We apply this technique to analyze vortex formation time in several groups of patients with differing cardiac pathologies.
