Auditory Hair Cells

Auditory hair cells are specialized sensory receptors in the inner ear that convert sound-induced vibrations into neural signals, making hearing possible. When sound moves the cochlear partition, it bends bundles of stereocilia on these cells, opening mechanically gated ion channels and changing membrane potential; inner hair cells then release neurotransmitter to activate auditory nerve fibers, while outer hair cells amplify and sharpen cochlear responses. In neuroscience, studying auditory hair cells clarifies how the brain receives acoustic information and how hearing loss develops. Their vulnerability to noise, aging, and ototoxic drugs also informs research on hearing protection, diagnostics, and regenerative therapies.

Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. The outer hair cells serve other functions, such as sound amplification in the cochlea, and are not discussed in detail here. Hair cells are named after...
