Closed-loop Control

Closed-loop control is a method in which a system continuously measures its output and adjusts its input to achieve a desired state, making it important for regulating dynamic biological processes. Sensors collect signals, a controller compares them with a target or reference, and an actuator modifies stimulation or other inputs through feedback. In neuroscience, this framework supports brain-computer interfaces, adaptive deep brain stimulation, and neuroprosthetic systems that respond to real-time neural activity or behavioral changes. By adapting intervention to the nervous system’s current state, closed-loop control can improve precision, reduce unnecessary stimulation, and help researchers study how neural circuits respond to targeted perturbations.

Control systems are foundational elements in automation and engineering. They are broadly categorized into open-loop and closed-loop systems. These classifications hinge on the presence or absence of feedback mechanisms, significantly influencing the system's performance, complexity, and application. An open-loop control system operates without feedback from the output. It consists of two primary elements: the controller and the controlled process. The controller receives an input signal and...

We present protocols and methods of analyses to build co-adaptive interfaces that stream, parameterize, analyze, and modify human body and heart signals in close-loop. This setup interfaces signals derived from the peripheral and central nervous systems of the person with external sensory inputs to help track biophysical change.
