Electromagnetic Impactor

An electromagnetic impactor is a laboratory device that delivers a controlled mechanical blow to biological tissue, enabling researchers to model traumatic brain injury with defined force, velocity, and timing. In neuroscience, an electromagnetic actuator converts electrical energy into rapid linear motion, driving an impact tip against the skull or exposed brain surface under standardized experimental conditions. This approach produces reproducible injuries for studying tissue deformation, neuronal damage, inflammation, and functional deficits. By adjusting impact parameters and monitoring behavioral or molecular outcomes, researchers can investigate injury mechanisms, compare treatment strategies, and improve understanding of how mechanical trauma leads to acute and long-term neurological consequences.

The electromagnetic spectrum consists of all the types of electromagnetic radiation arranged according to their frequency and wavelength. Each of the various colors of visible light has specific frequencies and wavelengths associated with them, and you can see that visible light makes up only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Because the technologies developed to work in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are different, for reasons of convenience and historical...

Electromagnetic waves are categorized according to their wavelengths and frequencies, giving the electromagnetic spectrum. These waves are classified as radio, infrared, ultraviolet, etc. Radio waves refer to electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from millimeters to kilometers. Radio waves are commonly used for audio communications (i.e., radios) and typically result from an alternating current in the wires of a broadcast antenna. They cover a broad wavelength range and are used...

Generating a Mouse Model of Traumatic Brain Injury Using an Impactor Device

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a mouse model. An anesthetized mouse with an exposed skull is taken to create an opening in the skull, and then a controlled cortical injury is induced using an impact device. The injury damages the brain tissue, causing impaired cognitive function and motor coordination.

Generating a Traumatic Brain Injury Mouse Model Using an Impactor Probe

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing an open-skull traumatic brain injury in a mouse by making a midline skull incision, drilling through the skull and removing the bone flap to expose the brain cortex, and applying high pressure to induce trauma. The wound is then sutured to prepare the mouse model for subsequent experiments.
