Fundus Laser Lens

A fundus laser lens is a specialized ophthalmic contact lens that enables clinicians and researchers to view and treat the retina with a slit lamp and laser system. Placed on the cornea with coupling gel, the lens alters the optical path, provides magnification and a controlled field of view, and focuses laser energy onto selected retinal regions for photocoagulation. In neuroscience, this tool supports investigations of retinal structure and function while helping manage conditions that affect neural tissue in the eye. Its optical design improves visualization, targeting, and procedural control during retinal imaging and laser-based experiments.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) supports the sensory retina through recycling visual cycle byproducts, which accumulate as lipofuscin. These products are autofluorescent and can be qualitatively imaged in vivo. Here, we describe a method to quantitatively image RPE lipofuscin using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.

We present a compact reflection digital holographic system (CDHM) for inspection and characterization of MEMS devices. A lens-less design using a diverging input wave providing natural geometrical magnification is demonstrated. Both static and dynamic studies are presented.

Modeling Retinal Degeneration and Regeneration in Zebrafish Using a Focal Laser Injury

This video demonstrates a procedure to induce retinal degeneration in adult zebrafish using laser injury. The laser targets photoreceptor cells in the retina, triggering cell death and a degenerative process. This damage activates Müller glia (MG) cells, leading to their dedifferentiation into stem cell progenitors that aid in retinal regeneration.
