Manual Annotation

Manual annotation is the systematic process of labeling features, structures, or events in data by human judgment rather than automated detection. In neuroscience, an annotator examines images, recordings, or other datasets and assigns predefined labels according to explicit criteria, often reviewing ambiguous cases and maintaining consistent decisions across samples. These annotations can identify brain regions, cellular structures, behavioral events, or signal patterns, creating reference datasets for analysis and model training. Although time-intensive, manual annotation provides expert-grounded labels that support neuroanatomical mapping, evaluation of computational methods, and interpretation of complex biological data.

Genome Annotation and Assembly

2021

The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Rabbits possess powerful hindlimb musculature and are susceptible to spinal injury if they struggle or kick while inadequately supported. Because rabbits vary in temperament and may struggle during restraint, handlers should...

As manual dexterity is a prerogative mainly of primates, behavioral tasks have been developed in macaque monkeys. Four reach and grasp prehension tasks, measuring hand manipulation ability and force, allow to establish functional recovery after a lesion of the central nervous system and to test the effect of a treatment.
