Micromanipulator Unit

A micromanipulator unit is a precision mechanical or motorized device that positions small laboratory tools with controlled, incremental movement, making accurate manipulation possible where unaided hand motion is insufficient. Its adjustment controls transmit movement through finely geared or motor-driven axes, allowing an attached electrode, probe, pipette, or other instrument to be advanced, withdrawn, or held steadily at a selected location. In neuroscience, micromanipulator units support the placement of recording and stimulating electrodes, tissue interfaces, and microinjection tools, improving experimental consistency and spatial precision. They are therefore important for electrophysiology, cellular manipulation, and reproducible studies of neural structure and function.

Measurement: Standard Units

2020

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

Measurement: Derived Units

The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units. Units of measurement derived from the mathematical combination of SI base units are called SI-derived units. For example, the ratio of the SI unit for distance (meter; m) and the SI unit for time (second; s) gives the SI-derived unit...

Microiontophoresis and Micromanipulation for Intravital Fluorescence Imaging of the Microcirculation

Microiontophoresis entails movement of ions from a micropipette in response to a difference in electrical potential between the inside and outside of the micropipette. Biologically active molecules are thereby delivered in proportion to electrical current. We illustrate acetylcholine microiontophoresis in conjunction with micromanipulation to study endothelium-dependent vasodilation in the microcirculation.
