Miniature Endplate Currents

Miniature endplate currents are small, spontaneous electrical signals recorded in skeletal muscle fibers when individual packets of acetylcholine are released from a motor neuron terminal. These events arise from stochastic, quantal neurotransmitter release and activation of postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which briefly open ligand-gated ion channels and depolarize the muscle membrane. In neuroscience, measuring their amplitude, frequency, and kinetics with intracellular or patch-clamp electrophysiology helps assess vesicle fusion, receptor function, and neuromuscular synaptic integrity, providing a sensitive readout of changes caused by development, disease, drugs, or altered neural activity.

The video demonstrates the electrophysiological analysis of embryonic stem cell-derived neurons after exposure to neurotoxins. Treating these neurons with botulinum neurotoxins reduces the frequency of spontaneous miniature excitatory post-synaptic currents, confirming inhibition of synaptic transmission.

A reverse engineering system is employed to record and obtain detailed and comprehensive geometry data of vertebral endplates. Parametric models of vertebral endplate are then developed, which are beneficial to designing personalized spinal implants, making clinical diagnoses, and developing accurate finite element models.

Recording Synaptic Currents at the Drosophila Larval Neuromuscular Junction

This video demonstrates the technique for recording synaptic currents from a synaptic bouton at the Drosophila larva's neuromuscular junction. This technique enables monitoring the activity of a single synaptic bouton, which is important for the study of mutant fly lines with enhanced spontaneous or asynchronous synaptic activity.

Electrical Current

2023

Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836). An ampere is the...

Current Assets

Current assets are those assets a company expects to use, sell, or convert to cash within one year through normal business operations. They are essential for maintaining liquidity and ensuring smooth business operations. Inventory, a critical component of current assets, varies depending on the type of business. For instance, a retail company like Walmart has an inventory consisting of a wide range of products, from groceries to electronics. In contrast, a construction company like Caterpillar...
