Synchronous Spiking

Synchronous spiking is the coordinated firing of action potentials by multiple neurons at the same or nearly the same time, a pattern that helps researchers understand how neural populations encode and transmit information. It can arise when neurons receive shared inputs, interact through synaptic connections, or become aligned by rhythmic network activity, causing their membrane potentials to reach threshold together. In neuroscience, measuring synchronous spiking with electrophysiology or calcium imaging reveals how circuits support sensory processing, movement, learning, and memory. Comparing normal and abnormal synchrony also helps clarify network dynamics associated with disorders such as epilepsy.

AC Synchronous Machine Synchronization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous motors are less popular than permanent magnet rotor synchronous motors due to the brushes required for the rotor field. Synchronous generators are much more common and available in most existing power plants, as they have excellent frequency and voltage regulation. Synchronous motors have the advantage of almost 0% speed regulation due to the fact that the rotor...

Triggering a Closed-Loop Stimulation by Neuron Spiking Activity

2025

This video demonstrates the operation of closed-loop stimulation in a rat with a surgically implanted device to record neural activity. Neuronal signals are first recorded and analyzed. Template waveforms are then uploaded, and parameters are defined to trigger closed-loop stimulation.

Source: Tran, B. N., et. al. High-throughput Confocal Imaging of Quantum Dot-Conjugated SARS-CoV-2 Spike Trimers to Track Binding and Endocytosis in HEK293T Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of quantum dot–conjugated spike protein (QD-Spike) to visualize dose-dependent viral entry in ACE2-GFP–expressing cells. Confocal imaging captures the internalization of QD-Spike via receptor-mediated endocytosis, modeling early coronavirus entry.
