Locomotor Activity Measurement

Locomotor activity measurement is the quantitative assessment of an organism’s movement over time, providing a behavioral indicator of nervous system function and drug effects. In pharmacology, automated systems record variables such as distance traveled, movement counts, speed, and time spent in defined areas using infrared beam breaks, video tracking, or open-field arenas. Researchers compare these measures with baseline or control conditions to evaluate whether a compound produces stimulation, sedation, motor impairment, or changes in exploratory behavior. The method supports preclinical studies of psychoactive drugs, dose-response relationships, side effects, and mechanisms involving central nervous system activity.

Locomotor activity (LMA) is a simple and easily performed measurement of behavior in mice. Coupling of video tracking software (VTS) and LMA allows for the improvement of specificity and sensitivity, especially when compared with the manual, line crossing method of LMA analysis. Additionally VTS allows long-term tracking of mouse LMA.
