Lumbar Injection

Lumbar injection is a procedure that delivers medication to selected structures in the lower spine, such as the epidural space, facet joints, or region around a spinal nerve, to diagnose or manage pain. Using anatomical landmarks or imaging guidance, a clinician advances a needle to the intended site and administers agents such as local anesthetics or corticosteroids, whose effects can temporarily reduce nerve signaling or local inflammation. In pharmacology, lumbar injections illustrate how route, dose, tissue distribution, and drug action influence therapeutic outcomes. They support targeted treatment, diagnostic assessment, and evaluation of pain mechanisms while helping limit systemic drug exposure.

2025

This video describes the technique of intrathecal placement of a lumbar drain in a porcine ischemic model, which helps in draining the cerebrospinal fluid to a drainage system. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure is monitored by the drainage system, and fluid is drained to maintain a constant cerebrospinal fluid pressure.

Intrathecal Vector Delivery in Juvenile Rats via Lumbar Cistern Injection
