Progressive Ratio Schedule

A progressive ratio schedule is a behavioral testing procedure in which the response requirement for each successive reward increases, allowing researchers to measure how much effort an organism will invest to obtain it. In pharmacology, a subject typically performs an operant response, such as pressing a lever, while the number of responses required for a drug infusion or other reinforcer rises according to a predetermined progression until responding stops. The final completed requirement, called the breakpoint, provides an index of reinforcing strength or motivation. Comparing breakpoints across drugs, doses, treatments, or experimental conditions helps evaluate abuse potential, dependence-related behavior, and the effects of candidate medications.

Reinforcement Schedules

Positive reinforcement is a powerful method for teaching new behaviors to both animals and humans. B.F. Skinner demonstrated this with his experiments using rats in a Skinner box. When a rat pressed a lever, it received a food pellet. This immediate reward encouraged the rat to repeat the behavior. This method, where a reward follows every instance of the behavior, is known as continuous reinforcement. It is highly effective for establishing new behaviors quickly. Once a behavior is learned,...

2025

This paper details the design, assembly, and protocol for an automated feeding system along with an alternative lid and cage modification that can be implemented on standard rodent cages with minimal modifications for tethered optogenetic or fiber photometry experiments. The feeding system offers a cost-effective tool for timed feeding and/or caloric restriction.

Liquidity Ratios: Current Ratio

2024

Liquidity management involves strategically acquiring and using cash or near-cash resources, such as marketable securities, treasury bills, or short-term deposits, to ensure the company can meet its cash obligations as they come due. The current ratio, calculated by dividing current assets by current liabilities, is a valuable tool for evaluating a company's liquidity. Current assets are resources that can be quickly converted into cash, typically within a year. These include cash, cash...
