Contact Time Duration

Contact time duration is the interval during which two objects remain in physical interaction, particularly during a collision, and it helps determine how forces affect motion. During this interval, the contact force acts over time to produce impulse, which equals the change in momentum; for a given momentum change, increasing the contact time generally reduces the average force. This principle explains why airbags, helmets, padded surfaces, and crumple zones reduce injury by extending collision duration. Measuring contact time also supports analysis of impacts, material behavior, and energy transfer in experiments ranging from sports physics to vehicle safety engineering.

Duration of Unemployment

2025

The duration of unemployment refers to the duration of the period an individual remains unemployed while actively seeking work. In the United States, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), this measure is used to find out how long individuals classified as unemployed have been actively searching for work while still being unemployed. The BLS uses an arithmetic mean to calculate the average duration of unemployment. This method involves summing the number of weeks of unemployment...

Meal Duration as a Measure of Orofacial Nociceptive Responses in Rodents

A lengthening in meal duration represents orofacial nociceptive behavior in rodents similar to the guarding behavior of humans with orofacial pain. Eating is a behavior that requires no training or animal manipulation, requires cortical participation, and is not competing with other experimentally induced behaviors, distinguishing this assay from alternative reflex or operant measurements.

Eye Movements in Visual Duration Perception: Disentangling Stimulus from Time in Predecisional Processes

2024

We present a protocol that employs eye tracking to monitor eye movements during an interval comparison (duration perception) task based on visual events. The aim is to provide a preliminary guide to separate oculomotor responses to duration perception tasks (comparison or discrimination of time intervals) from responses to the stimulus itself.

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces. The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...
