Electrostatic Generator

An electrostatic generator is a device that produces high electrical potential by separating and accumulating electric charges, making it a fundamental tool for studying electrostatics and electrical energy. It uses mechanical motion, friction, or electrostatic induction to transfer charge between conductors, while insulating materials prevent rapid discharge and allow voltage to build. Devices such as the Van de Graaff generator demonstrate this process by carrying charge on a moving belt to a metal dome, where it spreads across the surface. Electrostatic generators support physics education, laboratory experiments, particle acceleration, and investigations of electric fields, capacitance, and air ionization.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions

2025

Consider an external electric field propagating through a homogeneous medium. When the electric field crosses the surface boundary of the medium, it undergoes a discontinuity. The electric field can be resolved into normal and tangential components. The amount by which the field changes at any boundary is given by the difference between the field components above and below the surface boundary. The surface integral of an electric field is given by Gauss's law in integral form and is related to...

Removing recently deposited and incompletely decomposed plant material from soil samples reduces the influence of temporary seasonal inputs on soil organic carbon measurements. Attraction to an electrostatically charged surface can be used to quickly remove a substantial amount of particulate organic matter.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions in Dielectrics

2023

When an electric field passes from one homogeneous medium to another, crossing the boundary between the two mediums imparts a discontinuity in the electric field. This results in electrostatic boundary conditions that depend on the type of mediums the field propagates through. Consider a case where both the mediums across a boundary are two different dielectric materials. Recall that the electric field and electric displacement are proportional and related through the material's permittivity.

Real-Time DC-dynamic Biasing Method for Switching Time Improvement in Severely Underdamped Fringing-field Electrostatic MEMS Actuators

2014

The robust device design of fringing-field electrostatic MEMS actuators results in inherently low squeeze-film damping conditions and long settling times when performing switching operations using conventional step biasing. Real-time switching time improvement with DC-dynamic waveforms reduces the settling time of fringing-field MEMS actuators when transitioning between up-to-down and down-to-up states.

Growth and Electrostatic/chemical Properties of Metal/LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Heterostructures

2018

We fabricate metal/LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures using a combination of pulsed laser deposition and in situ magnetron sputtering. Through magnetotransport and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments, we investigate the interplay between electrostatic and chemical phenomena of the quasi two-dimensional electron gas formed in this system.
