Micro Channel Plate Detector

A microchannel plate detector is a compact electron multiplier that detects and amplifies charged particles, photons, or other radiation, making it valuable for measuring weak signals in physics. It contains thousands of parallel microscopic channels coated with a resistive material; when an incoming particle or photon releases an electron, an applied voltage accelerates it through a channel, triggering repeated secondary-electron emission and producing a measurable pulse. Microchannel plate detectors provide fast timing, high spatial resolution, and sensitive signal amplification for applications including particle and ultraviolet or X-ray detection, time-of-flight measurements, mass spectrometry, and image intensifiers.

2026

Source: Claes, J., et al, In Vitro and In Vivo Model to Study Bacterial Adhesion to the Vessel Wall Under Flow Conditions. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates a method for studying host-pathogen interactions using a micro-parallel plate flow chamber seeded with human primary endothelial cells. Following endothelial cell activation by an ionophore and perfusion with fluorescently labeled bacteria, the cells release von Willebrand factor (VWF), which binds bacterial adhesins under shear...

Ion Channels

2019

The movement of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium into and out of the cell is essential to maintain the electrochemical gradient in living cells. The ion channels—a class of membrane transport proteins—help maintain this ionic gradient for the smooth functioning of physiological activities such as maintaining cell size and volume, conducting nerve impulses, and gas and nutrient exchange. Ion channels are specialized integral membrane proteins on the plasma membrane that allow specific...
