Molecular Volume

Molecular volume is the space associated with an individual molecule, linking microscopic structure to the measurable properties of matter. In physics, it can be estimated from a molecule’s dimensions or by dividing a substance’s molar volume by Avogadro’s constant; for gases, effective molecular volume also represents the space excluded by finite particle size and intermolecular interactions. This concept supports analysis of density, molecular packing, and phase behavior in liquids and solids, while helping explain why real gases deviate from the ideal-gas model. Molecular volume therefore connects molecular geometry with equations of state and other descriptions of bulk materials.

Thus far, the ideal gas law, PV = nRT, has been applied to a variety of different types of problems, ranging from reaction stoichiometry and empirical and molecular formula problems to determining the density and molar mass of a gas. However, the behavior of a gas is often non-ideal, meaning that the observed relationships between its pressure, volume, and temperature are not accurately described by the gas laws. According to kinetic molecular theory, particles of an ideal gas do not exhibit...

Understanding Concentration and Measuring Volumes

Solutions are utilized to some degree in almost all biological research applications. Therefore understanding how to measure and manipulate them is imperative to any experiment. In this video, concepts in preparing solutions are introduced. Solutions consist of a solute dissolved in solvent to yield a homogeneous mixture of molecular substances. Solutions are generally identified by their components and corresponding concentrations. Concentrated solutions are diluted through various...

Molecular cloning is a set of methods, which are used to insert recombinant DNA into a vector - a carrier of DNA molecules that will replicate recombinant DNA fragments in host organisms. The DNA fragment, which may be a gene, can be isolated from a prokaryotic or eukaryotic specimen. Following isolation of the fragment of interest, or insert, both the vector and insert must be cut with restriction enzymes and purified. The purified pieces are joined together though a technique called...

Constant Volume Calorimetry

Calorimeters are useful to determine the heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction. Coffee cup calorimeters are designed to operate at constant (atmospheric) pressure and are convenient to measure heat flow (or enthalpy change) accompanying processes that occur in solution at constant pressure. A different type of calorimeter that operates at constant volume, colloquially known as a bomb calorimeter, is used to measure the energy produced by reactions that yield large amounts of heat and...
