Phase Difference

Phase difference is the angular offset between two periodic oscillations or waves, indicating how far one is ahead of or behind the other within a cycle. Measured in radians or degrees, it arises from differences in timing, path length, or starting conditions; a complete cycle corresponds to 360° or 2π radians. Phase difference determines how waves combine, producing constructive interference when they are aligned and destructive interference when they are opposed. In physics, this concept helps explain interference patterns, standing waves, polarization, and the behavior of alternating-current circuits, where voltage and current may be out of phase because of capacitance or inductance.

Just-noticeable Differences

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is a branch of psychology and neuroscience that tries to explain how physical quantities are translated into neural firing and mental representations of magnitude. One set of questions in this area pertains to just-noticeable differences (JND): How much does something need to change in order for the change to be perceivable? To pump intuitions about this, consider the fact that small children grow at an enormous...

Phase Diagrams

A phase diagram combines plots of pressure versus temperature for the liquid-gas, solid-liquid, and solid-gas phase-transition equilibria of a substance. These diagrams indicate the physical states that exist under specific conditions of pressure and temperature and also provide the pressure dependence of the phase-transition temperatures (melting points, sublimation points, boiling points). Regions or areas labeled solid, liquid, and gas represent single phases, while lines or curves represent...

Assessing Differences in Sperm Competitive Ability in Drosophila

2013

Differential sperm competitive ability among Drosophila males with distinct genotypes can be ascertained through double-mating experiments. Each of these experiments involves one of the males of interest and a reference male. Readily identifiable markers in the progeny allow inference of the fraction of individuals fathered by each male.

Single Phase Inverter

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. DC power is unidirectional and flows in one direction, whereas, AC current alternates directions at a frequency of 50-60 Hz. Most common electronic devices are designed to run off of AC power; therefore an input DC source must be inverted to AC. Inverters convert DC voltage to AC through switching action that repeatedly flips the polarity of the input DC source at the output or load side for part of...

Electric Potential and Potential Difference

2023

Suppose a positive test charge moves away from a positive static charge, then the Coulomb force does positive work, and its electric potential energy decreases. The potential energy per unit charge is defined as the electric potential. The electric potential is independent of the test charge. When a test charge moves from the initial to the final position, the electric potential difference between those positions is defined as the ratio of the change in the potential energy to the charge on the...
