Refrigerator Heat Engine Combination

A refrigerator heat engine combination is a coupled thermodynamic system in which a refrigerator transfers heat from a cold reservoir to a warmer one while a heat engine converts part of an available temperature difference into useful work. The refrigerator requires work to drive its cycle, absorbing heat from the low-temperature region and rejecting a larger amount, while the heat engine produces work by receiving heat from a hot reservoir and releasing waste heat to a cooler reservoir. Studying the combination applies the first and second laws of thermodynamics to energy balance, efficiency, and coefficient of performance. This model supports analysis of refrigeration systems, waste-heat recovery, and integrated energy technologies.

Refrigerators or heat pumps are heat engines operating in a reverse direction. For a refrigerator, the focus is on removing heat from a specific area, whereas, for a heat pump, the focus is on dumping heat into one particular area. A refrigerator (or heat pump) absorbs heat Qc from the cold reservoir at Kelvin temperature Tc and discards heat Qh to the hot reservoir at Kelvin temperature Th, while work W is done on the engine’s working substance. A household refrigerator removes heat from the...

The vapor compression cycle is the dominant refrigeration technology, found in most refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioning systems, and heat pumps. In this cycle, cooling (heat acquisition) is achieved with low-pressure evaporation of refrigerant. Thermal...

A heat engine is a device used to extract heat from a source and then convert it into mechanical work used for various applications. For example, a steam engine on an old-style train can produce the work needed for driving the train. Whenever we consider heat engines (and associated devices such as refrigerators and heat pumps), we do not use the standard sign convention for heat and work. For convenience, we assume that the symbols Qh, Qc, and W represent only the amounts of heat transferred...

With solar energy as the driving force, a novel adsorption refrigeration system has been developed and experimentally investigated. Water vapor and zeolite formed the working pair of the adsorption system. This manuscript describes the setup of the experimental rig, the operation procedure, and the important results.
