Series Parallel Connections

Series-parallel connections are arrangements of electrical components in which some elements share a single current path in series while others connect across common points in parallel. In a series section, the same current flows through each component and voltage divides among them; in a parallel section, components experience the same voltage while current divides between available branches, allowing complex circuits to be reduced using equivalent resistance. Analyzing these connections helps predict current, voltage, power, and circuit behavior from measured or known component values. This principle supports the design and troubleshooting of practical systems, including household wiring, electronic devices, sensor networks, and laboratory circuits.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment demonstrates how current is distributed in resistors connected in series or parallel, and thus describes how to calculate the total "effective" resistance. Using Ohm's law, it possible to convert between the voltage and current through a resistance, if the resistance is known. For two resistors connected in series, (meaning that they are wired one after the...

Capacitors, fundamental components in electronic circuits, can be connected in series and/or parallel configurations. Each configuration has different impacts on the overall behavior of the circuit. First, consider capacitors connected in series to a battery. In this configuration, the plate connected to the battery's positive terminal develops a positive charge, while the plate attached to the negative terminal becomes negatively charged. An equal magnitude of charge is induced on the other...

In electrical circuits, integrating inductors into the toolkit of passive elements requires navigating the intricacies of series and parallel combinations involving these components. Practical circuits often feature configurations of multiple inductors, and understanding how to determine their equivalent inductance is vital. For a series connection of N inductors, each carrying the same current, applying Kirchhoff's voltage law unveils a crucial relationship. Substituting the expression for...

Multiple capacitors connected serve as electrical components in various applications. These multiple capacitors behave as a single equivalent capacitor, and its total capacitance depends on the capacitance of individual capacitors and the type of connections. Capacitors can be arranged in two - orientations, either in series or parallel connections. Suppose the capacitors are connected one after the other such that the negative terminal of the first connects to the positive terminal of the...

The Bohr Model Niels Bohr proposed a model for the hydrogen atom in 1913 that described discrete energy states are associated with a fixed electron orbit around the nucleus. Importantly, an atom cannot discharge energy while its electrons are in stationary states. An electron can only emit energy by changing energy states. To change energy states, an electron must move from one orbit to another by either absorbing or emitting energy. This change can only occur if the absorbed or emitted energy...
