Activation Synthesis

Activation synthesis is a neurobiological theory of dreaming that proposes dreams arise when the brain interprets internally generated neural activity during sleep, rather than receiving a coherent message from the outside world. During rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, signals originating in the brainstem activate forebrain regions, and the cerebral cortex synthesizes these fragmented inputs with stored memories, emotions, and expectations into a narrative experience. In psychology, the theory helps explain why dreams can feel vivid yet disjointed, and why their content may reflect personal concerns without having a fixed symbolic meaning. It also links sleep physiology with research on consciousness, memory, and emotion.

2015

Indoxyl glycosides are well-established and widely used tools for enzyme screening and enzyme activity monitoring. Especially for glucose type structures previous syntheses proved to be challenging and low yielding. Our novel approach employs indoxylic acid esters as precious intermediates to yield a considerable number of indoxyl glycosides in good yields.

Synthesis of Substrate-Bound Au Nanowires Via an Active Surface Growth Mechanism

We report a solution-based method to synthesize substrate-bound Au nanowires. By tuning the molecular ligands used during the synthesis, the Au nanowires can be grown from various substrates with different surface properties. Au nanowire-based nanostructures can also be synthesized by adjusting the reaction parameters.

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

2016

A protocol to synthesize peptoids with mixed cationic functionality in the same sequence is presented (lysine- and arginine-type monomers). Subsequent testing of these compounds against Leishmania mexicana, the protozoan parasites that cause cutaneous leishmaniasis, is also described.

Solid Phase Synthesis

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...
