Brain Structures

Brain structures are the anatomical regions and interconnected networks that support sensation, movement, cognition, emotion, and behavior, making them central to understanding how the brain produces psychological functions. They work through specialized neural circuits in which neurons transmit electrical signals and release neurotransmitters at synapses, allowing regions to coordinate information and regulate responses. In psychology, studying areas such as the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, brainstem, and cerebellum helps relate brain organization to learning, memory, emotion, motivation, and motor control. This knowledge supports research on development, mental health conditions, brain injury, and treatments that target altered neural function.

We describe a novel approach for simultaneous analysis of brain function and structure using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We assess brain structure with high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging and white-matter fiber tractography. Unlike standard structural MRI, these techniques allow us to directly relate anatomical connectivity to functional properties of brain networks.

Three-Dimensional Shape Modeling and Analysis of Brain Structures

We introduce a semi-automatic protocol for shape analysis on brain structures, including image segmentation using open software, and further group-wise shape analysis using an automated modeling package. Here, we demonstrate each step of the 3D shape analysis protocol with hippocampal segmentation from brain MR images.
