Cultural Dissonance

Cultural dissonance is the psychological tension that arises when a person’s learned cultural values, norms, or identity conflict with the expectations of another cultural environment. It can develop when migration, education, work, relationships, or multicultural settings expose individuals to competing rules for communication, family roles, independence, or social behavior, requiring them to interpret and negotiate unfamiliar expectations. This tension may influence belonging, self-concept, decision-making, and interpersonal relationships, while culturally responsive support can improve adjustment. In psychology, studying cultural dissonance helps distinguish individual difficulties from context-driven conflicts and informs more inclusive counseling, education, and organizational practices.

Misattribution of Arousal and Cognitive Dissonance

2023

Source: Peter Mende-Siedlecki & Jay Van Bavel—New York University A host of research in psychology suggests that feelings of psychological arousal may be relatively ambiguous, and under certain circumstances, can lead us to make inaccurate conclusions about our own mental states. Much of this work flows from seminal research conducted by Stanley Schacter and and Jerome Singer. If someone experiences arousal and does not have an obvious, appropriate explanation, they may attempt to explain...

Cognitive Dissonance

2020

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

fMRI Mapping of Brain Activity Associated with the Vocal Production of Consonant and Dissonant Intervals

2017

The neural correlates of listening to consonant and dissonant intervals have been widely studied, but the neural mechanisms associated with production of consonant and dissonant intervals are less well known. In this article, behavioral tests and fMRI are combined with interval identification and singing tasks to describe these mechanisms.

Online Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of Dorsomedial and Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Cognition Decision Making, and Cognitive Dissonance

2025

This protocol presents a more precise and effective method of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the dorsolateral and dorsomedial prefrontal cortices during an experimental task using neuronavigation and robotic systems. Based on the results, crucial implications are suggested for future online stimulation research.

This video demonstrates New culture, a method by which chick embryos are cultured outside the egg for up to 24 hr. This method enables one to study early development (primitive streak to 14 som.), a period corresponding to E7-9 in mouse. Applications of this technique include electroporation, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry.
