Delayed Gratification

Delayed gratification is the ability to resist an immediately available reward in order to pursue a more valuable or meaningful outcome later, making it a central concept in psychology and self-regulation research. It operates through the interaction of reward valuation, impulse inhibition, attention, and temporal discounting, as people weigh present desires against anticipated future benefits. Researchers study delayed gratification to understand decision-making, motivation, executive control, and individual differences in behavior. Its principles inform approaches to education, health behavior, financial planning, and behavior change, while also highlighting how social context, stress, and available strategies can shape a person’s ability to wait.

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

Delay discounting refers to a decline in the value of a reward when it is delayed relative to when it is immediately available. We outline a computer-based delay discounting task that is easy to implement and allows for the quantification of the degree of delay discounting in human participants.

A Technique to Generate a Novel Delivery Platform for a Delayed Burst Release of Molecules

Hypersensitivity Reactions: Delayed Hypersensitivity Reactions

2026

Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity (DTH), or Type IV hypersensitivity, is a cell-mediated immune response. It occurs when T cells, rather than antibodies, mediate a reaction to specific antigens. It is characterized by a delayed onset (1-2 days) and involves the recruitment of macrophages to the inflammation site. The initiation of a DTH response begins with the sensitization of T cells. During this phase, which lasts at least 1-2 weeks, antigen-specific T cells are activated, clonally expanded, and...
