Experimental Methods

Experimental methods are systematic procedures for testing causal relationships by manipulating conditions, controlling potential confounds, and measuring outcomes. In psychology, researchers typically vary an independent variable, assign participants to experimental or control conditions, and assess changes in a dependent variable while using randomization, standardized procedures, and statistical analysis to evaluate whether the manipulation produced the observed effect. These methods support rigorous investigations of cognition, emotion, behavior, learning, and social interaction. Their findings help distinguish correlation from causation, evaluate psychological theories, improve interventions, and inform research in clinical, educational, developmental, and applied settings.
