Legal Judgments

Legal judgments are formal decisions issued by courts to resolve disputes, determine rights or liability, and apply laws to specific facts. They result from a structured process in which judges evaluate evidence, interpret legal rules, assess testimony, and provide reasoning for the decision. Psychology helps explain how attention, memory, emotion, bias, and perceptions of credibility can influence the collection and interpretation of evidence, as well as decision-making by judges, jurors, witnesses, and legal professionals. Studying these influences supports fairer procedures, improves the evaluation of eyewitness testimony, and informs research on judgment, decision-making, and justice.
