Wisconsin Card Sorting Test

The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test is a neuropsychological assessment of executive function, particularly cognitive flexibility, abstract reasoning, and the ability to shift strategies. Participants match response cards to reference cards according to an unstated rule based on color, form, or number, then use corrective feedback to infer the rule and adapt when it changes. Performance is evaluated through measures such as categories achieved, perseverative errors, and failures to maintain set. In psychology and clinical research, the test helps characterize executive dysfunction associated with brain injury, neurological disorders, psychiatric conditions, and developmental differences, while also supporting studies of learning and prefrontal cognitive control.

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville Infants are born with amazing cognitive resources at their disposal, but they don’t know how to use them effectively. In order to harness the power of their brains, humans must develop high-level cognitive processes that manage basic brain functions. These processes make up what psychologists refer to as executive function. Executive function is a key factor in many self-regulatory behaviors, including forming...
