Nominal Data

Nominal data are categorical values used to identify groups or labels without implying any natural order or numerical distance between categories. In statistics, observations are assigned to mutually distinct categories, such as blood type, eye color, or species, and researchers summarize them with counts, proportions, frequencies, and the mode rather than arithmetic averages. Nominal data support comparisons of category distributions through tools such as contingency tables and chi-square tests of association. They are essential for organizing survey responses, demographic characteristics, and experimental classifications, helping researchers identify patterns and relationships while avoiding inappropriate numerical interpretations.

Sign Test for Nominal Data

2025

The sign test is a nonparametric method used to evaluate hypotheses about the median of a single sample or to compare the medians of two related samples. The sign test is particularly useful when dealing with nominal data, which includes distinct categories without an inherent order, such as names, labels, and preferences. Nominal data restricts statistical analysis to evaluating population proportions rather than mean or median values that require continuous data. For example, consider a...

Nominal vs. Real GDP

Economic growth is a fundamental indicator of a nation's progress, but assessing it requires distinguishing between nominal and real gross domestic product (GDP). While nominal GDP represents the market value of all goods and services produced within a country using current prices, real GDP adjusts for inflation, providing a more accurate measure of economic expansion. The Impact of Inflation on GDPInflation, the general rise in price levels over time, distorts nominal GDP by increasing its...

Transformers with Off-Nominal Turns Ratios

In scenarios involving parallel transformers with disparate ratings, developing per-unit models requires accommodating off-nominal turns ratios. This situation arises when the selected base voltages are not proportional to the transformer’s voltage ratings. Consider a transformer where the rated voltages are related by the term a. If the chosen voltage bases satisfy a relationship involving term b, term c is defined as the ratio of these bases. This ratio is then substituted into the rated...

The Real and Nominal Interest Rate

2025

When you put money into a savings account or take out a loan, you usually see an interest rate. This number is called the nominal interest rate. It shows how much extra money you’ll earn or owe over time. But it doesn’t tell the full story. If prices go up while your money is sitting in the bank, you might not be gaining as much as you think. That’s where the real interest rate matters. The real interest rate takes inflation into account. Inflation means things cost more than they used to, so...

Nominal Level of Measurement

2023

The way a set of data is measured is called its level of measurement. Correct statistical procedures depend on a researcher being familiar with levels of measurement. Not every statistical operation can be used with every set of data. For analysis, data are classified into four levels of measurement—nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. The data that cannot be measured but can be grouped into categories fall under the nominal level of measurement. Data that is measured using a nominal scale is...
