Virus Concentration

Virus concentration is the amount of virus present in a defined volume of sample, a measurement that supports comparison of infectivity, abundance, and experimental outcomes. It is estimated by methods such as plaque assays, endpoint dilution, or quantitative PCR, which convert observed plaques, dilution responses, or amplification signals into viral concentration or titer; statistical models help account for sampling variation and measurement uncertainty. In statistics, these estimates enable researchers to compare groups, assess dose-response relationships, and evaluate reproducibility across experiments. Reliable concentration measurements are important for virology, vaccine and antiviral studies, environmental monitoring, and quantitative interpretation of biological data.

Glass wool filters have been used to concentrate waterborne viruses by a number of research groups around the world. Here we show a simple approach for constructing glass wool filters and demonstrate the filters are also effective in concentrating waterborne viral, bacterial and protozoan pathogens.

An approach was developed for identifying optimal viral concentration conditions for small volume water samples using spikes of human adenovirus. The techniques described here are used to identify concentration parameters for other viral targets, and applied to large-scale viral concentration experimentation.

Concentration Cells

A concentration cell is a type of a voltaic cell constructed by connecting two almost identical half-cells, both based on the same half-reaction and using the same electrode, differing only in the concentration of one redox species. A concentration cell's potential, therefore, is determined only by the concentration difference of the particular redox species. Consider the following voltaic cell: From the given information, the cell potential of this concentration cell can be calculated using...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Concentration DependenceExpand In this experiment, you will combine varying concentrations of aqueous HCl and sodium thiosulfate to make solid sulfur, which rapidly gathers into opaque yellow particles at a certain sulfur concentration. Since the reaction solution starts clear and colorless, you can easily tell when it reaches that concentration. You'll use the same test tube and total volume each time, so it will take the same amount...
