Q1: How do children identify pictures when they don't clearly resemble real objects?
Children use their understanding of the artist's intent to interpret ambiguous pictures. When a drawing doesn't look like what it represents, children rely on knowing what the creator meant to draw. By age 3, children can apply this understanding to identify both their own drawings and those created by others, even when the pictures are disorganized collections of shapes.
