大多数与中性粒细胞相互作用的金黄色葡萄球菌细胞已经死亡，而少数通过LIVE/DEAD染色确定仍然活着。乙锭同源二聚体-1染色的生物膜揭示了生物膜中死亡的金黄色葡萄球菌种群的一小部分。孵育30分钟后洗涤生物膜和中性粒细胞以去除未粘附的中性粒细胞的效果显示，大约33%的死中性粒细胞仍然附着在生物膜上。
