Animal Diversity

Was haben Pferde und Seepferdchen neben ihren Namen gemeinsam? Obwohl sie sehr unterschiedlich aussehen, sind sie beide Tiere. Im Allgemeinen definieren wir Tiere als mehrzellige Organismen, die beweglich sind, d.h. sich unabhängig bewegen können, organische Substanz zur Energiegewinnung verbrauchen und zur sexuellen Fortpflanzung fähig sind. Arten haben ihre unterschiedlichen Merkmale mit spezifischen Funktionen entwickelt, um ihre Fitness in ihren Lebensräumen wie zum Beispiel Lungen und Kiemen zu maximieren. Eine gute Faustregel ist, dass die Form der Funktion folgt, was bedeutet, dass die Funktion eines Merkmals durch seine Struktur und sein Aussehen vorhergesagt werden kann. Zum Beispiel haben verschiedene Finkenarten auf den Galapagosinseln unterschiedliche Schnäbel für bestimmte Ernährungsweisen entwickelt, wie z. B. dünne Schnäbel, um Nektar zu fressen, und dicke Schnäbel, um große Samen aufzubrechen. So können wir die Ernährung einer Art vorhersagen, indem wir Strukturen beobachten, die an der Nahrungsaufnahme beteiligt sind. 
Bestimmte Merkmale markieren Verzweigungspunkte im Evolutionsbaum, und dies gilt für den gesamten Stammbaum des tierischen Lebens. Wenn wir uns die Grundstruktur des evolutionären Stammbaums der Tiere ansehen, können wir sehen, dass er in viele verschiedene Stämme unterteilt ist, wobei jeder Stamm durch wichtige gemeinsame Merkmale definiert ist. Lassen Sie uns diese kurz durchgehen. 
Der erste große Stamm ist Porifera, was einfach Porenlager bedeutet. Als Erwachsene stationär, enthalten Porifera Filtrierer wie Schwämme. Der Mangel an Symmetrie und ausgeprägten Gewebeschichten unterscheidet Porifera von anderen Gruppen und verleiht ihnen eine enorme Regenerationskapazität, bei der ein ganzer Organismus aus einer kleinen Gruppe von Zellen nachwachsen kann. 
Der nächste Stamm, die Nesseltiere, umfasst Seeanemonen und Quallen, und diese Gruppe zeichnet sich durch ihre Tentakel mit spezialisierten Zellen in den Spitzen aus, mit denen sie Beute stechen und bändigen. Nesseltiere sind radialsymmetrisch, da sie entlang einer Mittelachse in gleiche Teile geteilt werden können und zwei Gewebeschichten besitzen, das Endoderm auf der Innenseite und das Ektoderm auf der Außenseite. Dies ermöglichte es Nesseltieren, einen einfachen Darm mit einer einzigen Öffnung zu entwickeln. 
Die Platyhelminthes, wörtlich übersetzt Plattwürmer, sind unsere nächste Gruppe. Plattwürmer weisen eine bilaterale Symmetrie auf, was bedeutet, dass sie spiegelbildliche Hälften entlang einer einzigen Achse haben. Die bilaterale Symmetrie ermöglichte die Kephalisierung, d. h. eine Konzentration von Sinnesorganen in der Nähe des vorderen Endes oder Kopfes, wo diese Tiere kontinuierlich mit ihrer Umgebung interagieren. Die Cephalisierung wiederum ermöglichte eine Richtungsbewegung, wie z. B. die Bewegung zu einer Nahrungsquelle. Platyhelminthen entwickelten auch eine dritte Gewebeschicht, das Mesoderm, das zwischen Ektoderm und Endoderm eingebettet ist. 
Als die Tiere immer komplexer werden, war es der segmentierte Stamm, Ringelwürmer wie der Regenwurm, der eine von Mesoderm ausgekleidete Körperhöhle entwickelte, die als Coelom bezeichnet wird. Diese neue Funktion ermöglichte eine weitere Spezialisierung des Gewebes und ebnete den Weg für die Organentwicklung. 
Die Komplexität dieser Spezialisierung ist bei Weichtieren erhöht, einer Gruppe, die so unterschiedliche Körperbaupläne wie Tintenfische, Schnecken und Muscheln umfasst. Diese Gruppe verfügt über viele spezialisierte Organe, die mit einem Mantel bedeckt und an Ort und Stelle gehalten werden. 
Gliederfüßer sind wohl der vielfältigste Stamm und umfassen Insekten, Krebstiere und Spinnentiere. Sie waren die erste Gruppe, die gelenkige Gliedmaßen entwickelte und erhielten daher einen entsprechenden Namen. Sie haben auch sensorische Antennen und ihr Körper ist in drei spezialisierte Segmente unterteilt: Kopf, Thorax und Bauch, die alle mit einem Exoskelett bedeckt sind. 
Zu den Chordatieren gehören schließlich unser alter Freund, der Samenfresser, und alle anderen Vögel sowie Manteltiere oder Seescheiden, Fische, Amphibien, Reptilien und Säugetiere. Chordatiere haben ihren Namen von einem neuen körperlichen Merkmal, das sie entwickelt haben, dem Nervenstrang, der bei diesem typischen Chordatierembryo deutlich zu sehen ist. Daraus entwickeln sich bei den meisten Erwachsenen das Gehirn und das Rückenmark. Sie haben auch eine knorpelige Struktur, den Notochord, der zur Wirbelsäule oder zum Rückgrat wird. 
Hier haben wir die Hauptstämme der Tiere extrem vereinfacht charakterisiert. Aber wie Sie sehen können, gibt es auch innerhalb eines einzigen Stammes zahlreiche Unterschiede in Form und Funktion. Das bedeutet, dass wir die unterschiedlichen Strukturen und Physiologien verschiedener Mitglieder eines einzigen Stammes beobachten und ihre Funktionen und Lebensgeschichten vorhersagen können.

Kingdom Animalia besteht aus einer Reihe von Organismen, die durch eine Reihe gemeinsamer Merkmale vereint sind. Die Nischenspezialisierung durch evolutionäre Anpassung ermöglicht es den Arten, in ihrer Umgebung effektiv zu überleben und sich zu vermehren, und reduziert die Konkurrenz zwischen den Arten innerhalb desselben Lebensraums1-2.
<h4>Klassifikation</h4>
Die Vielfalt im Königreich Animalia hat zur Klassifizierung von 36 verschiedenen Stämmen geführt, die auf ihrer evolutionären Abstammung basieren. Sieben dieser Stämme werden besprochen, darunter Porifera, Nesseltiere, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda und Chordata. Der erste, Stamm Porifera, ist der früheste, einfachste und ursprünglichste Stamm. Es handelt sich um mehrzellige, asymmetrische Filterschwämme, denen ausgeprägte Gewebeschichten fehlen. Interessanterweise können Schwämme nachwachsen, nachdem sie auf das Niveau einer einzelnen Zelle zerbrochen wurden. Als nächstes nimmt die Komplexität des Stammes der Nesseltiere zu, zu denen Quallen und Korallen gehören. Die Mitglieder dieses Stammes sind radialsymmetrisch und diploblastisch (mit zwei Gewebeschichten). Diese Gewebeschichten werden als Endoderm, aus dem die innere Schicht besteht, und als Ektoderm, das die äußere Schicht bildet, bezeichnet. Die Organismen des Stammes der Nesseltiere enthalten einen einfachen Darm mit einer einzigen Öffnung, durch die Nahrung eindringt und Abfallstoffe ausgeschieden werden. Sowohl Porifera als auch Nesseltiere umfassen Organismen, die als Erwachsene weitgehend sesshaft sind. Die verbleibenden Stämme haben jedoch Anpassungen entwickelt, die Bewegung und ausgefeilteres Verhalten ermöglichen.
Nach Nesseltieren gibt es zwei Stämme von Würmern, die als Platyhelminthes und Annelidas bezeichnet werden. Würmer aus diesen beiden Stämmen atmen, indem sie Gase über ihre Haut austauschen. Infolgedessen haben die meisten Würmer ein großes Verhältnis von Oberfläche zu Volumen und leben in feuchten oder aquatischen Umgebungen. Die Haut dieser Organismen muss feucht bleiben, um eine effektive Diffusion der Gase zu ermöglichen. Ein weiteres gemeinsames Merkmal von Würmern ist ihre bilaterale Symmetrie. Das bedeutet, dass ein Organismus entlang einer Ebene symmetrisch in zwei Hälften geteilt werden kann. Bilaterale Symmetrie ist nicht nur bei Würmern zu beobachten, sondern auch bei jedem Stamm ab diesem evolutionären Zeitpunkt. Eine solche Symmetrie ist wichtig, um gerichtete Bewegungen zu ermöglichen und die Sinnesorgane in der Nähe der vorderen Spitze oder des Kopfes zu konzentrieren, wo sie mit ihrer Umgebung interagieren. Würmer und spätere Stämme enthalten auch eine zusätzliche Gewebsschicht, das Mesoderm, das zwischen dem Ektoderm und dem Endoderm liegt. Infolgedessen gelten diese Organismen als "triploblastisch".
Von den beiden Stämmen der Würmer ist Platyhelminthes der älteste und einfachere. Dazu gehören Plattwürmer und Trematoden, die freilebend oder parasitär sein können. Wie Nesseltiere besitzen sie einen einfachen Darm mit einer einzigen Öffnung. Phylum Annelida ist komplexer und umfasst Regenwürmer, Laugen und Polychaeben. Diese Organismen enthalten eine Körperhöhle, das sogenannte Zölom, zwischen dem Darm und der Körperwand. Sie unterscheiden sich auch durch die Segmentierung ihrer Körper. Die Aufteilung eines Organismus in Segmente war ein wichtiger evolutionärer Schritt, der die Anpassung jedes Segments an spezialisierte Formen und Funktionen ermöglichte. Zu den wichtigsten evolutionären Fortschritten in diesem Stamm gehören die Entwicklung der vorderen Segmente mit Anhängen, die auf das Greifen und Verarbeiten von Nahrung spezialisiert sind, sowie der hinteren Segmente mit Anhängen, die auf die Fortbewegung spezialisiert sind.
Der nächste Stamm, Mollusca, enthält morphologisch sehr vielfältige Organismen, darunter Tintenfische, Schnecken, Nacktschnecken und Muscheln. Es gibt nur wenige definierende Merkmale für diese Gruppe. Alle Weichtiere besitzen jedoch einen Mantel, der als Schutzhülle für die Atmungsorgane, den Verdauungstrakt und die Fortpflanzungsstrukturen dient. Die vielfältigste Gruppe von Organismen ist der Stamm der Arthropoda. Allein dieser Stamm macht etwa drei Viertel aller heute bekannten lebenden und ausgestorbenen Arten aus, darunter Krebstiere, Insekten und Spinnentiere. Alle Mitglieder dieses Stammes haben eine harte, äußere Beschichtung aus Chitin, die als Exoskelett bezeichnet wird. Dieses Exoskelett wird in regelmäßigen Abständen abgelegt, um durch ein neues, größeres ersetzt zu werden. Wie Annelida sind auch Gliederfüßer segmentiert. Anstelle mehrerer sich wiederholender Abschnitte werden Arthropoden jedoch in drei verschiedene Segmente unterteilt, die als Kopf, Thorax und Abdomen bezeichnet werden. Die meisten haben spezielle Sensorstrukturen, die am Kopf befestigt sind, sogenannte Antennen.
Schließlich umfasst der Stamm Chordata alle Tiere mit und einige ohne Rückgrat. Zwei definierende Merkmale, die diese Gruppe vereinen, sind das Vorhandensein eines Nervensehnens und eines Notochords. Der Nervenstrang ist ein wichtiger Teil des chordaen Nervensystems und die Chorda ist eine knorpelige Struktur, die zwischen dem Nervenstrang und dem Verdauungstrakt verläuft. Zu den Stamm Chordata gehören Manteltiere (die nach der Metamorphose von der Larve zum erwachsenen Lebensstadium ihren Nervenstrang und ihr Notochord verlieren), Fische, Amphibien, Vögel, Reptilien und Säugetiere (einschließlich Menschen)3.
<h4>Form und Funktion</h4>
Die enorme Vielfalt an Körperstruktur, Lebensräumen und Verhaltensweisen, die bei allen 36 Stämmen innerhalb von Kingdom Animalia beobachtet wird, ist wirklich erstaunlich. Um diese Unterschiede besser zu verstehen, ist es wichtig, den Zusammenhang zwischen Form und Funktion zu betrachten. "Form" bedeutet einfach die Form, Größe und Substanz einer Struktur oder eines Organismus, während "Funktion" für die Art und Weise steht, in der diese Struktur verwendet wird. Dementsprechend kann die Funktion einer Struktur anhand der beobachteten Form vorhergesagt werden oder umgekehrt. Zum Beispiel würde man vorhersagen, dass ein Vogel, der darauf spezialisiert ist, harte Nüsse zu knacken, einen robusten, scharfen Schnabel hat, während ein Vogel, der Obst isst, einen kleineren, runderen Schnabel haben kann.
Wichtig ist, dass die Form eines Organismus durch seine physiologischen Anforderungen eingeschränkt wird. Zum Beispiel müssen alle Tiere organisches Material aufnehmen und verdauen und Gas mit ihrer Umwelt austauschen. Daher müssen alle Anpassungen an die Form eines Tieres fortgesetzt werden, um diese Prozesse effizient zu erleichtern. Bei kleineren Tieren ist beispielsweise die Diffusion von Gasen über die Haut möglich und oft nützlich. Mit zunehmender Größe eines Tieres nimmt jedoch sein Verhältnis von Oberfläche zu Volumen ab, bis die Diffusion über die Haut keinen ausreichenden Gasaustausch mehr gewährleisten kann. Solche größeren Tiere haben komplexe Systeme entwickelt, um mit dem Gasaustausch umzugehen, wie z. B. die Lungen eines Wals oder die Kiemen eines Fisches. Infolgedessen hängt die Morphologie von Gasaustauschsystemen sowohl von der Größe eines Organismus als auch von seiner Umgebung ab.
In ähnlicher Weise folgt es im Allgemeinen bei anderen Arten von Anpassungen, dass die Form der Funktion folgt und nur durch die physiologischen Bedürfnisse des Organismus eingeschränkt wird. Es gibt jedoch Fälle, in denen die Form nicht der Funktion folgt. Vestigiale Strukturen sind solche, die im Vorfahren eines Organismus einen Zweck erfüllten, aber in ihrer jetzigen Form nicht mehr nützlich sind. Solche Strukturen haben wenig bis gar keinen Einfluss auf die Fitness eines Individuums und werden daher innerhalb der Population evolutionär nicht dafür oder gegen sie selektiert. Dies hat zur Folge, dass einige Strukturen mit eingeschränkter Funktionsfähigkeit bestehen bleiben. So ist beispielsweise der menschliche Blinddarm, eine kleine Tasche am Ende des Dickdarms, ein evolutionäres Überbleibsel unserer Vorfahren. Während die Hypothese aufgestellt wurde, dass diese Struktur nützliche Darmbakterien speichert, ist die Entfernung des Blinddarms ohne schädliche Auswirkungen möglich.
<h4>Konvergente Evolution</h4>
Von den Anpassungen, die im Königreich Animalia beobachtet wurden, haben sich viele im Laufe der Evolutionsgeschichte mehrfach entwickelt. Betrachten Sie als Beispiel die Flügel einer Fledermaus und die eines Vogels. Diese Strukturen sind nicht das Ergebnis evolutionärer Verwandtschaft, sondern sind aus konvergenter Evolutionentstanden 4. Konvergente Evolution tritt auf, wenn zwei Organismen unabhängig voneinander ähnliche Merkmale aufgrund ähnlicher Umwelteinflüsse oder Nischen entwickeln. Die Flügel von Fledermäusen, Vögeln und Einschüben haben sich alle unabhängig voneinander entwickelt und werden als "konvergente Merkmale" bezeichnet. Offensichtlich sind solche Merkmale für die Nischen, in denen sie entstehen, sehr vorteilhaft.

Kingdom Animalia includes a wide range of organisms that share a few basic traits. Most animals are multicellular eukaryotes that move, consume organic matter, and reproduce sexually. Even with those shared features, animals are extremely diverse because each species adapts to a different niche. A niche is the place, role, and set of interactions a species has with living and nonliving parts of its environment. Specialization helps species survive, reproduce, and reduce competition with others in the same habitat.

This diversity has led scientists to classify animals into 36 phyla based on evolutionary lineage. Seven major phyla are highlighted here: Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda, and Chordata. Porifera is the earliest and simplest group. It includes sponges that are multicellular, asymmetrical, and filter feeding. They lack distinct tissue layers, and some can regrow even after being broken apart to the level of a single cell.

Cnidaria is a more complex phylum that includes jellyfish and corals. These animals are radially symmetric and diploblastic, which means they have two tissue layers: ectoderm and endoderm. They also have a simple gut with one opening for both food intake and waste removal. Both Porifera and Cnidaria include animals that are mostly sedentary as adults. The next groups show more movement and more complex behavior.

Platyhelminthes and Annelida are the two worm phyla discussed here. Worms in both groups exchange gases across their skin, so they usually need moist or aquatic environments and a large surface area to volume ratio. They also have bilateral symmetry, which means the body can be split into matching left and right halves. This symmetry supports directed movement and places sensory organs near the anterior tip, or head. Worms and later phyla are triploblastic because they also have a mesoderm, the middle tissue layer.

Platyhelminthes is the older and simpler worm phylum. It includes flatworms and trematodes, which may live freely or as parasites. Like cnidarians, these animals have a simple gut with one opening. Annelida is more complex and includes earthworms, leeches, and polychaetes. These animals have a coelom, which is a body cavity between the gut and the body wall, and they are segmented. Segmentation was an important evolutionary step because it allowed different body segments to specialize for different tasks, such as grasping food or moving.

Mollusca is a highly varied phylum that includes octopuses, snails, slugs, and clams. Members of this group share few obvious features, but all mollusks have a mantle. The mantle is a protective covering for the respiratory organs, digestive tract, and reproductive structures. Arthropoda is the most diverse animal phylum and includes crustaceans, insects, and arachnids. It makes up about three quarters of all known living and extinct species. Arthropods have a chitin-based exoskeleton that must be shed and replaced as they grow. They are also segmented, but their bodies are organized into the head, thorax, and abdomen, and most have antennae for sensing.

Chordata includes animals with a backbone and a few without one. Two features unite this group: a nerve cord and a notochord. The nerve cord is a major part of the chordate nervous system, and the notochord is a cartilaginous support structure between the nerve cord and the digestive tract. Chordates include tunicates, fish, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals, including humans. Tunicates are unusual because they lose the nerve cord and notochord after they change from larva to adult.

The many body forms seen in Kingdom Animalia show how closely form and function are linked. Form means the shape, size, and substance of a structure, while function is the way that structure is used. A bird that cracks hard nuts is expected to have a sturdy, sharp beak, while a fruit-eating bird may have a smaller, rounder beak. Animal form is also limited by basic needs. Animals must eat, digest, and exchange gases with their environment, so any adaptation still has to support those jobs efficiently.

Gas exchange shows this link clearly. Small animals can often exchange gases across the skin by diffusion. As animals get larger, their surface area to volume ratio decreases, and diffusion across the skin is no longer enough. Larger animals therefore use specialized systems such as the lungs of a whale or the gills of a fish. The exact form of a gas exchange system depends on both body size and environment.

Some structures do not follow function in a useful way today. Vestigial structures are traits that were useful in an ancestor but have little or no current function. They do not strongly affect fitness, so natural selection does not act on them much. The human appendix is one example. It is a small pocket at the end of the large intestine, and it may store helpful gut bacteria, but it can be removed without harmful effects.

Similar traits can also evolve more than once. This is called convergent evolution. It happens when unrelated organisms independently develop similar features because they face similar environmental pressures or fill similar niches. Bat wings and bird wings are an example, and insect wings are another. These traits are convergent, not evidence of close evolutionary relatedness, and they show how similar needs can shape animal form in different lineages.

Bacteria and fungi are highly diverse organisms, and scientists identify them by looking at their structure, growth, and role in health.
