Electron Carriers

Elektronenüberträger sind Verbindungen, die hochenergetische Elektronen bewegen, die Währung der Zellen für extrahierbare Energie, über Redoxreaktionen, und die Oxidations- und Reduktionszustände koordinieren bzw.
 diese negativ geladenen Teilchen verlieren und gewinnen.
 Zum Beispiel ist eine Hauptverbindung das Nicotinamid-Adenin-Dinukleotid oder NAD, so genannt, weil ein Ribosering eine Adeninbase aufweist, während der andere über ein angehängtes Nicotinamid verfügt, welches an die ersten Kohlenstoffatome angehängt ist.
 An der fünften Kohlenstoffposition sind diese beiden Nukleotide sind durch zwei Phosphatgruppen verbunden.
 Während des Metabolismus, bindet sich NAD (als Ko-Enzym) an ein Enzym, das die Reaktionen katalysiert und wirkt als Oxidationsmittel, wobei zwei Wasserstoffatome entfernt werden sowie ein Paar Elektronen von einem Reaktanten, wie z.
 B.
 einem Zucker.
 Diese Elektronen werden dann übertragen auf den positiv geladenen Stickstoff, und ein Wasserstoffatom ist an den gegenüberliegenden Kohlenstoff gebunden und bildet NADH.
 Am Ende verbleiben die zusätzlichen Wasserstoffprotonen im Zytoplasma zurück, und das NADH schickt seine Elektronen zur Mitochondrienmembran, wo sie in die Elektronen- transportkette eindrangen, und die Träger können sich weiterhin Redoxreaktionen unterziehen.

Elektronenträger kann man sich als Elektronentransporter vorstellen. Diese Verbindungen können leicht Elektronen aufnehmen (d.h. reduziert werden) oder sie abgeben (d.h. oxidiert werden). Sie spielen daher eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Energiegewinnung, da die Zellatmung vom Elektronenfluss abhängig ist.
 
 Über die vielen Schritte der Zellatmung wird Glukose zu Kohlendioxid und Wasser zersetzt. Die Elektronenträger nehmen die bei diesen Reaktionen von der Glukose verlorenen Elektronen auf, speichern sie kurzzeitig und führen sie in die Elektronentransportkette ein.
 
 Zwei solcher Elektronenträger sind NAD+ und FAD. Sie stammen beide aus B-Vitaminen. Die reduzierten Formen von NAD+ bzw. FAD, NADH und FADH2 werden in vorherigen Schritten der Zellatmung (Glykolyse, Pyruvat-Oxidation und Citratzyklus) produziert.
 
 Die reduzierten Elektronenträger NADH und FADH2 transportieren die Elektronen in die Komplexen I und II der Elektronentransportkette. Dabei werden sie zu NAD+ und FAD oxidiert.
 
 Zusätzliche Elektronenträger in der Elektronentransportkette sind Flavoproteine, Eisen-Schwefel-Cluster, Chinone und Cytochrome. Mit Hilfe von Enzymen übertragen diese Elektronenträger schließlich die Elektronen auf Sauerstoffmoleküle. Die Elektronenträger werden bei der Elektronenabgabe oxidiert und bei der Elektronenaufnahme reduziert. Sie wechseln also zwischen ihrer oxidierten und reduzierten Form.
 
 Elektronenträger sorgen für einen kontrollierten Elektronenfluss, der die Produktion von ATP ermöglicht. Ohne sie könnte eine Zelle nicht funktionieren.

Electron carriers help move electrons through cellular respiration. They act like shuttles that can accept electrons, which means they are reduced, or give electrons away, which means they are oxidized. This changing between oxidized and reduced forms is essential for energy production.

As glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water, it loses electrons at several stages. Electron carriers pick up those electrons and store them temporarily. They then release the electrons into the electron transport chain, where the cell can use them to make ATP.

NAD+ and FAD are two important electron carriers. Both come from B vitamins. Their reduced forms, NADH and FADH2, are made during glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, and the citric acid cycle. NADH donates electrons to complex I of the electron transport chain, while FADH2 donates electrons to complex II.

Other electron carriers also work in the electron transport chain. These include flavoproteins, iron-sulfur clusters, quinones, and cytochromes. With help from enzymes, they pass electrons along until oxygen receives them. This controlled flow of electrons keeps ATP production going, and without it, the cell would stop working.
