Polygenic Traits

Wenn mehrere Gene zusammenarbeiten, um einen Phänotyp zu beeinflussen, ist das Ergebnis ein polygenes Merkmal oder ein Merkmal mit vielen Genen.
 Ein solches Merkmal ist die Körpergröße des Menschen, von der angenommen wird, dass sie von Hunderten von Loci beeinflusst wird.
 Obwohl jedes Gen im Allgemeinen eine minimale Rolle bei der Bestimmung der Körpergröße spielt, bestimmen seine Auswirkungen, wie groß ein Individuum im Erwachsenenalter sein wird.

Studien haben Hunderte von Loci aufgedeckt, welche die Körpergröße beeinflussen können. Es wird sogar angenommen, dass es noch viele mehr gibt. Die Körpergröße innerhalb einer bestimmten Population variiert erheblich aufgrund der hohen Anzahl der beteiligten Gene sowie durch Umwelt -und Ernährungsfaktoren. Die Verteilung der Höhe bildet eine glockenförmige Kurve dar. Es gibt innerhalb einer Bevölkerung nur relativ wenige Individuen, welche eine minimale oder maximale Körpergröße erreichen. Die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung befindet sich im mittleren Bereich der Körpergröße. Die meisten polygenen Merkmale bilden glockenförmige Kurven. Dazu gehören beispielsweise das Gewicht, der Blutdruck und Aspekte der Fingerabdruckmuster.
 
 <h4>Die Menschliche Größe—eine polygene Eigenschaft</h4>
 
 Obwohl sich Mendels bahnbrechende Arbeit über genetische Vererbung auf Merkmale konzentrierte, die durch einzelne Gene entstanden sind, haben Experimente wie genomweite Assoziationsstudien gezeigt, dass viele menschliche Merkmale sich durch die Zusammenarbeit von mehreren Genprodukten entwickeln. Die Zusammenarbeit zahlreicher Gene zur Beeinflussung eines Phänotyps bestimmt ein polygenes (d.h., viele Gen) Merkmal.
 
 Ein Beispiel für eine polygene Eigenschaft ist die menschliche Körpergröße. Hunderte von Loci beeinflussen die Körpergröße eines Menschen und es wird vermutet, dass es noch mehr gibt die gefunden werden müssen. Viele dieser Gene beeinflussen beispielsweise direkt oder indirekt den Knorpel in den Wachstumsfugen, die sich in den langen Knochen der Arme und Beine befinden.
 
 <h4>Die Verteilung von polygenen Merkmalen in einer Bevölkerung</h4>
 
 Die menschliche Körpergröße variiert erheblich. Das ist zum Teil durch den Einfluss einer großen Anzahl an Genen. Die Körpergröße wird jedoch auch durch Umwelt- und Ernährungsfaktoren beeinflusst. Beispiele hierfür sind Szenarien, in denen eine Mutter während der Schwangerschaft geraucht hat oder nicht, ihre Ernährung während der Schwangerschaft oder die Ernährung des Nachkömmlings.
 
 In einer Bevölkerung, in der die minimale weibliche Körpergröße etwa 1,52 m (fünf Fuß) und die maximale weibliche Körpergröße etwa 1,82 m (sechs Fuß) beträgt, wird man Frauen aller Größen zwischen diesen Werten finden. Die Darstellung der Größenverteilung ergibt eine glockenförmige Kurve. Dabei kommen relativ wenige Frauen vor, welche eine minimale oder maximale Körpergröße erreichen. Die Mehrheit hat eine Körpergröße nahe dem Durchschnitt von etwa 1,67 m (5,5 Fuß). Die meisten polygenen Merkmale, wie Gewicht, Blutdruck und Aspekte des Fingerabdruckmusters nehmen aufgrund der hohen Anzahl möglicher Kombinationen der Allele ebenfalls glockenförmige Verteilungen an.

polygenic traits in human height

Polygenic traits are traits controlled by more than one gene. Human height is a clear example of this kind of inheritance. Because many genes work together, the final trait can vary a lot from person to person.

Researchers have found hundreds of loci, or gene locations, that influence height. There are likely many more that have not yet been identified. Many of these genes affect cartilage in the growth plates of the long bones in the arms and legs, either directly or indirectly.

Height is also shaped by environmental and nutritional factors. These include whether the mother smoked during pregnancy, the mother’s diet during pregnancy, and the offspring’s diet. This is one reason height can differ so much within a population.

When height is plotted for a population, it usually forms a bell-shaped curve. Few people are close to the minimum or maximum heights, and most fall near the middle range. Other polygenic traits, such as weight, blood pressure, and some fingerprint features like ridge number, often show the same pattern because so many allele combinations are possible.
