How Genes Map to Chromosomes
Description
Genes map to chromosomes, and this idea explains how Mendel’s inheritance patterns work. Gregor Mendel published his pea plant breeding results in 1866. He showed that physical traits follow predictable patterns. At the time, scientists did not yet know that genes existed. Mendel used the word "factors" for the her...

In the late 1800s, after Mendel had made his observations of inheritance in pea plants, improvements in microscopy allowed scientists to visualize sub-cellular structures in detail for the first time. After the processes of mitosis and meiosis were observed and described, it was proposed that chromosomes were Mendel's heritable particles.
