Eigenschaften wie die Größe sind nicht nur durch verschiedene Gene geprägt, was als natürlicher Einfluss bezeichnet wird, sondern auch durch verschiedene Umweltfaktoren, was unter Ernährung zusammengefasst wird.
 Zum Beispiel kann eine schlechte Ernährung in der Kindheit, wie ein Mangel an Protein, das Wachstum eines Menschens bremsen, deshalb bleibt er im Erwachsenenalter kleiner, verglichen damit, wie er sich mit guter Ernährung entwickelt hätte.
 Interessanterweise hat die bessere Ernährung wahrscheinlich dazu beigetragen, dass die Durchschnittsgröße seit dem frühen 20.
 Jahrhundert stetig ansteigt, ein Trend, der sich in bestimmten Regionen von Amerika, Europa und Asien besonders zeigt.
 Es gibt jedoch auch Beweise, dass das emotionale Umfeld der Kinder, wie chronischer Stress und ein Mangel an Sozialisation, den Spiegel der Wachstumshormone im Körper stört, ebenso das Größenwachstum zügelt.
 Teils ist es das Zusammenspiel von Natur und Ernährung, was das endgültige Erscheinungsbild eines Phänotyps bestimmt wie die Größe einer Person und sogar, ob die Person im Laufe des Lebens Krebs oder eine Herzkrankheit bekommt.

Viele menschliche Eigenschaften, wie die Körpergröße, werden sowohl von der Natur bzw. unseren Genen sowie durch die Ernährung oder Umwelt beeinflusst. Zum Beispiel hemmt chronischer Stress in der Kindheit die Produktion von Wachstumshormonen und reduziert folglich Knochenwachstum und die Körpergröße. Wissenschaftler schätzen, dass 70-90% der Größenunterschiede zwischen Individuen auf genetische Unterschiede zurückzuführen sind. 10-30% der Größenunterschiede resultieren aus Unterschieden in der Umgebung, in der ein Individuum aufgewachsen ist. Viele andere Phänotypen werden in ähnlicher Weise sowohl von den Genen als auch von der Umgebung beeinflusst. Einige dieser Phänotypen entstehen erst später im Leben, wie Krebs und andere Krankheiten.
 
 <h4>Der Einfluss der Ernährung auf die Körpergröße</h4>
 
 Hunderte von Genen, welche die Körpergröße eines Menschen beeinflussen, sind bereits identifiziert worden. Eine Studie fand heraus, dass der wichtigste Faktor, der die derzeitigen Unterschiede in der Statur von Männern in verschiedenen Ländern erklärt, ist das Verhältnis zwischen der Nahrungsaufnahme von hochwertigem tierischem Eiweiß und minderwertigen Proteinen aus Getreide und Gemüse während der Kindheit.
 
 Die größten frühen Menschen waren vermutlich Jäger des Jungpaläolithikums der Gravettien-Kultur, die vor 34.000 bis 26.000 Jahren in Europa florierte. Ihre Statur war zum Teil bedingt durch eine geringe Bevölkerungsdichte und eine Ernährung, die reich an hochwertigen tierischen Eiweißen war. Die in der heutigen Zeit beobachtete Zunahme der Körpergröße wird auf ernährungsphysiologische und sozioökonomische Verbesserungen zurückgeführt.
 
 <h4>Der Einfluss von Stress auf die Körpergröße</h4>
 
 Das körperliche Wachstum ist metabolisch anspruchsvoll und wird durch Stress teilweise durch die Hypothalamus-Hypophysen-Nebennierenrinden-Achse (Stressachse) gehemmt. Zum Beispiel stimuliert das Corticotropin-releasing-Hormon (CRH) die Synthese des adrenocorticotropen Hormons (ACTH), das die Freisetzung von Glucocorticoiden (z.B. Cortisol, das Stresshormon) induziert. Cortisol regt den Appetit an, reduziert aber die Produktion von IGF-1 in der Leber, das auch für das Knochenwachstum und die Knochenentwicklung benötigt wird. Zusätzlich erhöht ein Überschuss an Glucocorticoiden die Freisetzung der Somatostatins, welche die Freisetzung des Wachstumshormons hemmen.
 
 Bei Kindern hat sich gezeigt, dass chronischer Stress das Knochenwachstum und die Gewichtszunahme hemmt. Beides kann sich fortsetzen, wenn der Stress reduziert oder beseitigt wird. Wenn Kinder unter sozialen Stressbedingungen aufgezogen werden, sich zu viele Kinder zu wenig Ressourcen teilen und sowohl physische als auch emotionale Bedürfnisse nicht erfüllt werden, können Kinder außerdem eine Wachstumsverzögerung erfahren. Dies zeigt sich bei Heimkindern, die keine starken, beständigen Beziehungen zu ihren Betreuern entwickeln. Daher können Stress, psychosozial bedingte Hemmung der Wachstumshormone und unzureichende Ernährung die Körpergröße beeinflußen.
 
 <h4>Eine Kombination aus Natur und Pflege</h4>
 
 Da die Menschen verschiedene Gene erben und unter verschiedenen Umweltbedingungen aufwachsen, leben und sich entwickeln, ist es wichtig zu bedenken, dass sowohl die Natur als auch die Aufbringung das endgültige Aussehen vieler Phänotypen beeinflussen. Dazu gehören auch Phänotypen, die sich erst später im Leben entwickeln können, wie Krebs oder Herzkrankheiten.

Genes and environment both shape human height and other traits. Genes are the inherited instructions we get from our parents. Environment includes factors such as diet, stress, and social conditions. Many phenotypes, or observable traits, reflect both influences. Some also show up later in life, including cancer and other diseases.

Height is a clear example of this interaction. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of height variation comes from genetic differences among people. The remaining 10-30% comes from environmental differences, such as diet. Hundreds of genes linked to height have been identified in humans.

Nutrition can strongly affect how tall a person grows during childhood. One study found that the biggest factor in stature differences among men in different nations was the balance between high-quality animal protein and lower-quality protein from grains and vegetables. Early Upper Paleolithic hunters from the Gravettian culture were among the tallest known men. They lived in Europe 34,000 to 26,000 years ago. Their height, from about 5'10&quot; to 6'2&quot;, was helped by a low population density and a diet rich in high-quality animal protein. In modern times, greater height is linked to improved nutrition and social conditions.

Stress can also limit growth. Physical growth uses a lot of energy, and stress can slow it down through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In this pathway, corticotropin-releasing hormone, or CRH, stimulates adrenocorticotropic hormone, or ACTH. ACTH leads to the release of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, the main stress hormone. Cortisol can reduce the liver’s production of IGF-1, a factor needed for bone growth, and too much glucocorticoid can increase somatostatin, which lowers growth hormone release.

Chronic stress in children can reduce bone growth and weight gain, and these changes may improve when stress is reduced. Growth delay can also appear when children live in socially stressful settings with too many children sharing too few resources and with unmet physical and emotional needs. This is seen in institutionalized children who do not form strong, steady relationships with caregivers. Overall, genes and environment work together to shape final traits, including features that may develop much later in life.
