Introduction to Cellular Respiration

Die Zellatmung ist der katabole Prozess in dem organische Moleküle abgebaut werden, um über eine Elektronentransportkette nutzbare Energie zu erzeugen.
 Dieser Prozess benötigt beim Menschen und den meisten anderen Organismen Sauerstoff und produziert Kohlendioxid, Wasser, Wärme, und nutzbare Energie in Form von ATP.
 Während viele verschiedene organische Moleküle, Zucker, Aminosäuren und Lipide bei der Zellatmung eingesetzt werden können, wird Glukose als der Prototyp verwendet.
 Somit ist die Gleichung für die Zellatmung C6 H12 O6 plus sechs O2, führt zu sechs CO2 plus sechs H20 plus Energie.
 Dies ist die Umkehrung der Photosynthese.
 Diese Reaktion erfolgt tatsächlich in mehreren Schritten.
 Die Glykolyse befindet sich im Zytoplasma, die Pyruvatoxidation und der Zitronensäurezyklus geschehen in den Mitochondrien, und es findet eine oxidative Phosphorylierung über der inneren mitochondrialen Membran statt.
 Zusammen bilden diese Prozesse die Grundlage für zelluläre Aktivitäten durch Flagellarbewegung, Muskelkontraktion, durch den Abbau organischer Moleküle zur Herstellung von ATP.

Organismen beziehen Energie aus Nahrung. Diese Energie kann von den Zellen jedoch nicht direkt genutzt werden. Daher wandeln Zellen die in den Nährstoffen gespeicherte Energie in eine besser verwertbare Form namens Adenosintriphosphat (ATP) um.
 
 ATP speichert Energie in chemischen Bindungen, die bei Bedarf schnell freigesetzt werden kann. Die Zellen produzieren Energie in Form von ATP durch den Prozess der Zellatmung. Obwohl ein Großteil der Energie aus der Zellatmung in Form von Wärme abgegeben wird, wird ein Teil davon für die Herstellung von ATP verwendet.
 
 Bei der Zellatmung werden in mehreren Oxidations-Reduktionsreaktionen (Redoxreaktionen) Elektronen von organischen Molekülen auf andere Moleküle übertragen. Hier bezieht sich die Oxidation auf den Elektronenverlust und die Reduktion auf den Gewinn von Elektronen. Die Elektronenträger NAD + und FAD und ihre reduzierten Formen, NADH und FADH2</sun>, sind für mehrere Schritte der Zellatmung unerlässlich.
 
 Einige Prokaryoten nutzen die sogenannte anaerobe Atmung, die keinen Sauerstoff benötigt. Die meisten Organismen nutzen die aerobe (sauerstoffabhängige) Atmung, welche viel mehr ATP produziert. Die aerobe Zellatmung erzeugt ATP, indem Glukose und Sauerstoff in Kohlenstoffdioxid und Wasser aufgespalten werden.
 
 Sowohl die aerobe als auch die anaerobe Atmung beginnen mit der Glykolyse, die keinen Sauerstoff benötigt. Bei der Glykolyse wird Glukose in Pyruvat umgesetzt, wobei ATP entsteht. In Abwesenheit von Sauerstoff fermentiert das Pyruvat und produziert NAD+ für die weitere Glykolyse. Verschiedene Hefearten nutzen die alkoholische Gärung. Menschliche Muskelzellen können die Milchsäuregärung verwenden, wenn der Sauerstoff erschöpft ist. Diese anaerobe Atmung endet mit der Gärung.
 
 Die aerobe Atmung setzt sich jedoch mit der oxidativen Decarboxylierung von Pyruvat fort. Bei der oxidativen Decarboxylierung von Pyruvat entsteht Acetyl-CoA, das in den Citratzyklus eintritt. Der Citratzyklus besteht aus mehreren Redoxreaktionen, in denen die Bindungsenergie des Acetyl-CoAs freigesetzt wird und ATP und die reduzierenden Elektronenträger NADH und FADH2 gebildet werden.
 
 Die letzte Stufe der Zellatmung, die oxidative Phosphorylierung, erzeugt den größten Teil des ATPs. NADH und FADH2 leiten ihre Elektronen durch die Elektronentransportkette. Die Elektronentransportkette setzt Energie frei, die zur Abgabe von Protonen verwendet wird, wodurch ein Protonengradient entsteht, der die ATP-Synthese ermöglicht.

Cellular respiration is the process cells use to turn energy from food into ATP. ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, stores energy in chemical bonds that can be released quickly when cells need it. Much of the energy released during respiration becomes heat, but some of it is captured to make ATP.

This process depends on oxidation-reduction, or redox, reactions. In these reactions, oxidation means electron loss and reduction means electron gain. The electron carriers NAD+ and FAD, along with their reduced forms NADH and FADH2, play essential roles in several stages of cellular respiration.

Most organisms use aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen and breaks down glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. Some prokaryotes use anaerobic respiration, which does not require oxygen. Both aerobic and anaerobic respiration begin with glycolysis, and glycolysis can happen without oxygen.

Glycolysis splits glucose into pyruvate and produces ATP. If oxygen is missing, pyruvate undergoes fermentation so NAD+ can be regenerated for continued glycolysis. Yeast carry out alcoholic fermentation, while human muscle cells can use lactic acid fermentation when oxygen is low. Anaerobic respiration ends with fermentation.

Aerobic respiration continues after glycolysis with pyruvate oxidation. This step converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA, which enters the citric acid cycle. The citric acid cycle uses several redox reactions to release the bond energy of acetyl-CoA and produces ATP, NADH, and FADH2.

The final stage is oxidative phosphorylation, which makes most of the ATP. NADH and FADH2 pass electrons through the electron transport chain. The chain releases energy that pumps protons, creating a gradient that drives ATP synthesis. For most organisms, aerobic respiration produces much more ATP than anaerobic respiration.
