Non-nuclear Inheritance

In eukaryotischen Zellen vermehren sich Mitochondrien und Plastiden, eine Art Pflanzenzellorganellen zu denen auch Chloroplasten gehören, vermehren sich unabhängig im Zytoplasma, und sie verfügen jeweils einen eigenen Satz von Genen, die ihre Reproduktion und Funktion steuern.
 Mitochondrien- und Plastiden-DNA liegen in Form kleiner, kreisförmiger DNA-Moleküle vor und werden als nicht-nukleare oder zytoplasmatische DNA bezeichnet.
 Jede Organelle trägt viele identische Kopien ihrer DNA, im Gegensatz zum Zellkern, in dem man typischerweise nur zwei Kopien jedes Chromosoms gibt.
 Ferner werden die Organellen während der Zellteilung zufällig in neue Tochterzellen aufgeteilt, sodass die nicht-nukleare DNA, die weitergegeben wird, keinem festgelegten Muster folgt.
 Während der Fortpflanzung bei Tieren vielen Pflanzen, stammt das Zytoplasma in der Zygote aus dem Ei.
 Während also beide Elternteile gleichermaßen zum DNA-Kern beitragen, wird die nicht-Zellkern-DNA nur von der Mutter weitergegeben.
 Das bedeutet, dass bestimmte Merkmale, wie zum Beispiel Stoffwechselstörungen infolge von Mutationen in den Mitochondrien, matrilinear nachvollzogen werden können.
 Zusätzlich werden einige äußerliche Merkmale in Pflanzen, wie die Blattfarbe, durch nichtnukleare Gene gesteuert und auch uniparental weitergegeben.

extranukleare vererbung

Der Großteil der DNA befindet sich im Nukleus einer Zelle. Einige Organellen im Zytoplasma der Zelle haben jedoch auch eigene DNA, wie zum Beispiel Chloroplasten und Mitochondrien. Diese Organellen replizieren ihre DNA unabhängig von der DNA des Zellkerns. Die extranukleare Vererbung beschreibt die Vererbung von Genen aus anderen Strukturen als dem Nukleus.
 
 Mitochondrien sind sowohl in Pflanzen als auch in tierischen Zellen vorhanden. Sie gelten als die Kraftwerke der eukaryotischen Zellen, da sie Glukose in Energie umwandeln und somit Zellaktivitäten ermöglichen. Die mitochondriale DNA besteht aus etwa 37 Genen und viele dieser Gene sind an diesem Prozess, der oxidativen Phosphorylierung, beteiligt.
 
 Chloroplasten kommen in Pflanzen und Algen vor und sind die Orte der Fotosynthese. Die Fotosynthese ermöglicht diesen Organismen, aus Sonnenlicht Glukose zu produzieren. Die DNA der Chloroplasten besteht aus etwa 100 Genen, von denen viele an der Fotosynthese beteiligt sind.
 
 Im Gegensatz zur chromosomalen DNA des Zellkerns folgen die Chloroplasten-DNA und die mitochondriale DNA nicht der Mendel'schen Annahme, dass die Hälfte des genetischen Materials eines Organismus von jedem Elternteil stammt. Das liegt daran, dass Spermien während der Befruchtung im Allgemeinen keine mitochondriale oder Chloroplasten-DNA zu den Zygoten beitragen.
 
 Während eine Samenzelle in erster Linie einen haploiden Satz von Kernchromosomen zur Zygote beiträgt, liefert die Eizelle ihre Organellen zusätzlich zu ihren Kernchromosomen. Zygoten (und Chloroplasten in Pflanzenzellen) bekommen normalerweise die Mitochondrien und Chloroplasten nur von der Eizelle. Man nennt dies maternale Vererbung. Die maternale Vererbung ist eine Art der extranuklearen Vererbung.
 
 Warum haben Mitochondrien und Chloroplasten ihre eigene DNA? Die vorherrschende Erklärung ist die Endosymbiontentheorie. Die Endosymbiontentheorie besagt, dass Mitochondrien und Chloroplasten einst unabhängige Prokaryoten waren und sich an einem bestimmten Punkt mit den eukaryotischen Wirtszellen in einer Symbiose verbunden haben, welche für beide Partner vorteilhaft war.

Maternal DNA in mitochondria and chloroplasts explains how some genes are inherited outside the nucleus. Most DNA is in the nucleus, but mitochondria and chloroplasts in the cell cytoplasm also carry their own DNA and can copy it independently of nuclear DNA.

Mitochondria are found in both plant and animal cells. They are called the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells because they break down glucose to make energy for cellular activity. Mitochondrial DNA has about 37 genes, and many help with oxidative phosphorylation, the energy-making process.

Chloroplasts are found in plants and algae. They are the sites of photosynthesis, which lets these organisms make glucose from sunlight. Chloroplast DNA has about 100 genes, and many of those genes help carry out photosynthesis.

This kind of inheritance does not follow the Mendelian idea that half of an organism’s genetic material comes from each parent. Sperm cells usually do not pass on mitochondrial or chloroplast DNA during fertilization. The egg cell contributes its organelles as well as its nuclear chromosomes, so zygotes and plant chloroplasts usually receive mitochondria and chloroplasts only from the egg. This is called maternal inheritance, which is a type of non-nuclear, or extranuclear, inheritance.

The main explanation for why these organelles have their own DNA is the endosymbiotic theory. It says mitochondria and chloroplasts were once independent prokaryotes. They later entered host eukaryotic cells and formed a symbiotic relationship that benefited both partners.
