In der Zellatmung ist die Ausbeute von 30-32 ATP-Molekülen das Ergebnis der schrittweisen Produktion von hochenergetischen Molekülen, zwei ATPs und zwei NADHs bei der Glykolyse, zwei NADHs bei der Oxidation von Pyruvat, zwei ATPs und sechs NADHs und zwei FADH2s im Zitronensäurezyklus und ungefähr 26 oder 28 ATPs bei der oxidativen Phosphorylierung.
 Dieser ATP-Bereich ist aus drei Gründen ungefähr.
 Erstens, da die Elektronenträger NADH und FADH2 indirekt ATP produzieren, indem sie Wasserstoffionen in den Zwischenmembranraum pumpen, erzeugen sie theoretische Anteile von ATP, 2,5 beziehungsweise 1,5 ATP.
 Zweitens kann NADH, das bei der Glykolyse erzeugt wird, die Mitochondrienmembran nicht passieren und muss daher die Mitochondrienmembran passieren energiereiche Elektronen an andere Elektronenträger in den Mitochondrien.
 Je nach Zelltyp werden FADH2 oder NADH produziert und erhalten entweder je 1,5 oder 2,5 ATPs.
 Drittens wird die durch die Atmung erzeugte Energie auch für andere Aktivitäten wie den Transport von Pyruvat durch die Mitochondrienmembran verwendet, wobei etwa 30 oder 32 ATPs entstehen.

Die Zellatmung produziert 30-32 ATP-Moleküle pro Glukosemolekül. Obwohl der größte Teil des ATP durch die oxidative Phosphorylierung und die Elektronentransportkette entstehen, werden vorher bereits 4 ATP produziert (2 aus der Glykolyse und 2 aus dem Citratzyklus).
 
 Die Elektronentransportkette befindet sich in der inneren Membran der Mitochondrien und besteht aus vier Hauptproteinkomplexen sowie einer ATP-Synthase. NADH und FADH2 geben Elektronen an diese Komplexe ab, die daraufhin Protonen in den Intermembranraum pumpen. Diese Verteilung der Protonen erzeugt einen Konzentrationsgradienten durch die Membran. Dieser Gradient fördert die ATP-Produktion, wenn die Protonen durch die ATP-Synthase in die mitochondriale Matrix zurückfließen.
 
 Für je 2 Elektronen, die NADH in den Komplex I überführt, transportieren die Komplexe I und III je 4 Protonen und der Komplex IV 2 Protonen, wobei insgesamt 10 Protonen transportiert werden. Der Komplex II ist nicht an der von NADH initiierten Elektronenkette beteiligt. FADH2 hingegen gibt 2 Elektronen an Komplex II weiter, so dass insgesamt 6 Protonen pro FADH2 transportiert werden; 4 Protonen durch Komplex III und 2 durch Komplex IV.
 
 Vier Protonen werden benötigt, um 1 ATP zu synthetisieren. Da für jedes NADH 10 Protonen gepumpt werden, ergibt 1 NADH 2,5 ATP (10/4). Sechs Protonen werden für jedes FADH2 gepumpt, so dass 1 FADH2 1,5 ATP (6/4) ergibt.
 
 Die Zellatmung produziert maximal 10 NADH und 2 FADH2 pro Glukosemolekül. Da ein einzelnes NADH 2,5 ATP und ein einzelnes FADH2 1,5 ATP produziert, ergeben sich durch oxidative Phosphorylierung somit 25+3 produzierte ATP. Vor der oxidativen Phosphorylierung werden vier ATP gebildet, und somit ergibt sich ein Maximum von 32 ATP pro Glukosemolekül.
 
 Bedeutend ist, dass die Glykolyse im Zytosol stattfindet und die Elektronentransportkette in den Mitochondrien (in Eukaryoten) lokalisiert ist. Die mitochondriale Membran ist nicht für NADH durchlässig, weshalb die Elektronen der 2 NADH, die durch die Glykolyse hergestellt werden, in die Mitochondrien transportiert werden müssen. Sobald sie sich im Mitochondrium befinden, können die Elektronen an NAD+ oder FAD weitergegeben werden. Angesichts der unterschiedlichen ATP-Ausbeute je nach Elektronenträger beträgt die Gesamtbetrag der Zellatmung 30 bis 32 ATP pro Glukosemolekül.

Cellular respiration makes ATP from glucose in several stages. The process usually produces 30 to 32 ATP per glucose molecule. Most of that ATP comes from oxidative phosphorylation and the electron transport chain, while 4 ATP are made earlier, with 2 from glycolysis and 2 from the citric acid cycle.

The electron transport chain, or ETC, sits in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It has four main protein complexes and ATP synthase, the enzyme that makes ATP. NADH and FADH2 deliver electrons to these complexes. As electrons move through the chain, the complexes pump protons into the intermembrane space and build a gradient across the membrane.

That proton gradient powers ATP production. Protons flow back into the mitochondrial matrix through ATP synthase, and this flow drives ATP formation. For every 2 electrons that NADH sends through complex I, 10 protons are pumped in total. Complex I and complex III each pump 4 protons, and complex IV pumps 2 protons. Complex II is not part of the electron chain started by NADH.

FADH2 follows a different path. It passes 2 electrons to complex II, so a total of 6 protons are pumped per FADH2. In this case, complex III pumps 4 protons and complex IV pumps 2 protons. Four protons are needed to make 1 ATP. That means 1 NADH yields 2.5 ATP, and 1 FADH2 yields 1.5 ATP.

Per glucose molecule, cellular respiration can produce up to 10 NADH and 2 FADH2. Since each NADH makes 2.5 ATP and each FADH2 makes 1.5 ATP, oxidative phosphorylation produces 25 ATP from NADH and 3 ATP from FADH2. Adding the 4 ATP made before that stage gives a maximum of 32 ATP per glucose molecule. In eukaryotes, glycolysis happens in the cytosol, and the ETC is in the mitochondria.

The mitochondrial membrane does not let NADH cross. Because of that, the electrons from the 2 NADH made in glycolysis must be shuttled into the mitochondria. Once inside, those electrons may be passed to NAD+ or FAD. Since the shuttle path can change the carrier used, the total ATP yield of cellular respiration is usually 30 to 32 ATP per glucose molecule.
