Wenn Elektronen durch einen Draht fließen oder Ionen durch eine Lösung, erzeugen sie Strom. Dieser Elektronenfluss, genauer gesagt die elektrische Ladung, wird als elektrischer Strom definiert. Doch was bewirkt, dass die Elektronen fließen?
Stellen Sie sich eine Redoxreaktion zwischen Kupfer und Zink vor. Wenn eine Zinkelektrode in eine Kupferionenlösung gelegt wird, werden Elektronen von einer Substanz auf eine andere übertragen. 
Zink, das eine größere Tendenz zum Verlust von Elektronen hat, wird zu Zinkionen oxidiert, während Kupferionen zu festem Kupfer reduziert werden. Bei dieser Reaktion fließen Elektronen von Zink nach Kupfer, aber bei dieser Reaktion wird kein Strom erzeugt. 
Nehmen wir nun an, dass die Reaktanten Zink und Kupfer physikalisch getrennt und über einen externen Leiter, wie z. B. einen Draht, verbunden sind. Die Tendenz der Reaktanten, Elektronen zu gewinnen oder zu verlieren, besteht weiterhin, wodurch die Elektronen durch den Draht fließen, der die beiden Halbreaktionen verbindet. 
Dieser Elektronenfluss stellt einen elektrischen Strom dar und kann elektrische Geräte wie eine Glühbirne mit Strom versorgen.
Der elektrische Strom wird in Ampere gemessen. Ein Ampere entspricht dem Fluss von einem Coulomb elektrischer Ladung pro Sekunde, was 6,24 × 1018 Elektronen pro Sekunde entspricht.
Der Fluss des elektrischen Stroms ist vergleichbar mit Wasser, das einen Wasserfall hinunterfließt. Das Wasser wird durch die Differenz der potentiellen Gravitationsenergie angetrieben, während der Elektronenfluss durch die Differenz der elektrischen potentiellen Energie zwischen den Reaktanten angetrieben wird. 
Diese Differenz in der elektrischen potentiellen Energie wird mit den Begriffen Potentialdifferenz, elektromotorische Kraft oder Zellpotential beschrieben. Das Zellpotential ist ein Maß für die treibende Kraft zwischen zwei Reaktanten und die Tendenz zum Elektronentransfer.
Das Zellpotential von zwei isolierten Reaktanten wird mit einem Voltmeter gemessen, das in Zellspannung abgelesen wird. Ein Volt entspricht einem Joule potentieller Energie pro Coulomb elektrischer Ladung.
Ein hohes Zellpotential deutet auf eine große Antriebskraft und eine größere Leichtigkeit des Elektronentransfers hin. Schließlich hängt das Zellpotential oder die elektromotorische Kraft von der Art der Reaktanten, der Reaktionstemperatur und der Konzentration der in der Reaktion vorhandenen Ionen ab.

Elektrizität wird entweder dadurch erzeugt, dass Elektronen oder Ionen durch eine Lösung oder ein leitendes Medium fließen. Dieser Elektronenfluss bzw. die elektrische Ladung wird als elektrischer Strom bezeichnet. Wenn sich Elektronen durch einen Draht bewegen, erzeugen sie einen elektrischen Strom. Man kann sich daran erinnern, dass bei einer Redoxreaktion Elektronen verloren und gewonnen werden. Bei der spontanen Redoxreaktion von Zink mit Kupfer kommt es beim Eintauchen von Zink in eine Kupferionenlösung zu einer Übertragung von Elektronen von einer Substanz auf eine andere. <img alt="Eq1" src="/files/ftp_upload/11433/11433_Equation_1.png" style="text-align: center; height: 50px;"> Zink, das eine größere Tendenz zum Elektronenverlust hat, wird zu Zinkionen oxidiert, während Kupferionen zu festem Kupfer reduziert werden. Dies liegt an der unterschiedlichen Redoxaktivität der beiden Spezies Ag+ (aq) und Pb2+ (aq) gegenüber Kupfer: Das Silberion oxidiert Kupfer spontan, das Bleiion jedoch nicht. Dieser Unterschied in der Redoxreaktivität in der Elektrochemie kann mit dem Begriff „Zellpotential“ quantifiziert werden; auch allgemein als „Spannung“ bekannt. Electromotive Force

Electric current is the flow of electric charge through a conducting medium or a solution. In wires, that charge is carried by electrons. In some solutions, ions can also move and carry charge. When electrons move through a wire, they produce an electric current.

This idea connects to redox reactions, where electrons are lost and gained. In the spontaneous reaction between zinc and copper ions, zinc is oxidized to zinc ions. Copper ions are reduced to solid copper. Even so, this direct reaction does not generate useful electricity.

Electricity is produced when the half-reactions are separated into different vessels and linked by an external wire. The tendency for electrons to move from the reducing agent to the oxidizing agent still remains. But now the electrons must travel through the wire instead of moving directly in solution. That forced movement is an electric current, and it can power devices such as a light bulb.

Electric current is measured in amperes. One ampere means one coulomb of charge moves each second. That is equal to about 6.24 × 10^18 electrons per second. Since one electron has a charge of 1.602 × 10^-19 C, the ampere gives a direct measure of electron flow.

The flow of current depends on a driving force, much like water flowing down a waterfall. Water moves because of a difference in gravitational potential energy. Electrons move because of a difference in electrical potential energy between the reactants. This difference is called potential difference, electromotive force, or cell potential.

Electromotive force, or emf, describes the driving force between two reactants and their tendency to transfer electrons. Some redox reactions are spontaneous, but others are not. For example, copper wire is oxidized spontaneously by silver(I) ions, but it does not react with lead(II) ions. That difference shows that silver ions and lead ions do not have the same redox reactivity toward copper.

Cell potential is another name for this redox driving force, and voltage is a common word for it. A voltmeter is used to measure the cell potential of two isolated reactants. The reading is given in volts. One volt equals one joule of potential energy per coulomb of charge. A high cell potential means a strong driving force and easier electron transfer. The electromotive force also depends on the nature of the reactants, the temperature, and the concentration of ions in the reaction.
