Batteries and Fuel Cells

Batterien sind Voltaikzellen, die als tragbare Stromquellen verwendet werden. Sie werden in primäre oder nicht wiederaufladbare und sekundäre oder wiederaufladbare Batterien eingeteilt.
Die übliche Primärbatterie ist die Trockenzelle. Es enthält ein Zinkgehäuse als Anode und eine Graphitkathode, die in eine feuchte, saure Elektrolytpaste aus Mangan(IV)-oxid und Ammoniumchlorid getaucht ist. 
Das Zink oxidiert zu Zinkchlorid und Mangan(IV)-oxid reduziert sich zu festem Mangan(III)-oxid, wodurch ein Potential von 1,5 Volt erzeugt wird. Beim Betrieb werden die Elektroden leer, so dass Trockenzellen zu Einwegbatterien werden.
Alkalibatterien sind ähnlich, verwenden jedoch einen alkalischen Elektrolyten, der ihre Haltbarkeit und Lebensdauer verlängert.
Blei-Säure-Batterien sind Sekundärbatterien, die überwiegend in Automobilen eingesetzt werden. Diese verfügen in der Regel über sechs in Reihe geschaltete elektrochemische Zellen, die ein Gesamtpotenzial von 12 Volt erzeugen. Jede Zelle hat eine Bleianode und eine Bleioxid-Kathode, die in Schwefelsäure getaucht sind. 
Während der Entladung lagern die Redoxreaktionen festes Bleisulfat auf beiden Elektroden ab, das beim Aufladen mit Hilfe einer externen Stromquelle wieder zurückgeführt wird.
Nickel-cadmium-wiederaufladbare Batterien enthalten eine Nickeloxyhydroxid-Kathode, eine Cadmium-Anode und einen Kaliumhydroxid-Elektrolyten. Beim Betrieb oxidiert die Anode zu festem Cadmiumhydroxid und die Kathode zu festem Nickelhydroxid, wodurch ein Zellpotential von 1,3 Volt erzeugt wird. 
Die Toxizität von Cadmium führt jedoch dazu, dass Nickel-cadmium-Batterien durch umweltfreundliche nickel–Metallhydrid-Batterien. Hier bleibt die Kathode die gleiche, aber die Anode ist eine wasserstoffabsorbierende Legierung. Bei der anodischen Reaktion wird aus Wasserstoff Wasser gebildet. 
Lithium-Ionen-Batterien sind die neuesten Sekundärbatterien. Leichtes Lithium-Metall macht diese Batterien tragbar mit hoher Energiedichte. 
A lithium-Ionen-Batterie enthält eine lithiierte Graphitanode und eine Lithium–Übergangsmetalloxid-Kathode. Beim Laden wird das Übergangsmetall oxidiert, während zwischen den anodischen Graphitschichten Lithium-Ionen eingebaut werden. Bei der Entladung fließen Lithium-Ionen von der Anode zur Kathode und erzeugen ein Potential von 3,7 Volt. 
Brennstoffzellen schließlich sind Voltaikzellen, die eine kontinuierliche externe Zufuhr von Redox-Reaktanten zur Energieerzeugung benötigen. 
Eine typische Wasserstoff-Brennstoffzelle nutzt Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff aus der Luft, um einen Strom zu erzeugen und gleichzeitig Wasser abzugeben. Graphitelektroden enthalten Katalysatoren auf Platinbasis, um die Redoxreaktion zu beschleunigen.

Eine Batterie ist eine galvanische Zelle, die als elektrische Energiequelle für bestimmte Anwendungen verwendet wird. Moderne Batterien gibt es in einer Vielzahl von Formen für verschiedene Anwendungen, von winzigen Knopfbatterien, die beispielsweise Armbanduhren mit Strom versorgen, bis hin zu sehr großen Batterien, die zur Notstromversorgung kommunaler Stromnetze verwendet werden. Einige Batterien sind für den einmaligen Gebrauch konzipiert und können nicht wieder aufgeladen werden (Primärzellen), während andere auf praktisch reversiblen Zellreaktionen basieren, die das Aufladen über eine externe Stromquelle ermöglichen (Sekundärzellen). Einwegbatterien (Primärbatterien). Eine Trockenzelle ist eine übliche Primärbatterie, die Zink sowohl als Behälter als auch als Anode („–“-Anschluss) und einen Graphitstab als Kathode („+“-Anschluss) verwendet. Die Zn-Dose ist mit einer Elektrolytpaste gefüllt, die Mangan(IV)-oxid, Zink(II)-chlorid, Ammoniumchlorid und Wasser enthält. Zur Vervollständigung der Zelle wird ein Graphitstab in die Elektrolytpaste getaucht. Die spontane Zellreaktion umfasst: <img alt="Eq1" src="/files/ftp_upload/11439/11439_Equation_1.png" style="text-align: center; height: 168px;"> Die Spannung (Zellpotential) einer Trockenzelle beträgt ca. 1,5 V (E_cell ~ 1,5 V). Trockenzellen sind in verschiedenen Größen erhältlich (z. B. D, C, AA, AAA). Alle Größen von Trockenzellen bestehen aus den gleichen Komponenten und weisen die gleiche Spannung auf, größere Zellen enthalten jedoch größere Mengen der Redoxreaktanten und sind daher in der Lage, entsprechend größere Ladungsmengen zu übertragen. Wie andere galvanische Zellen können Trockenzellen bei Bedarf in Reihe geschaltet werden, um Batterien mit höherer Ausgangsspannung zu erhalten.  Alkalibatterien basieren auf den gleichen Redoxpaaren wie Trockenzellen. Wie der Name schon sagt, verwenden diese Batterietypen alkalische Elektrolyte, häufig Kaliumhydroxid. Die Reaktionen sind <img alt="Eq2" src="/files/ftp_upload/11439/11439_Equation_2.png" style="text-align: center; height: 130px;"> Eine Alkalibatterie kann etwa drei- bis fünfmal so viel Energie liefern wie eine Trockenzelle ähnlicher Größe (E_cell = +1,43 V). Alkalibatterien neigen zum Auslaufen von Kaliumhydroxid und sollten daher zur Langzeitlagerung aus den Geräten entfernt werden. Während einige Alkalibatterien wiederaufladbar sind, ist dies bei den meisten nicht der Fall. Wiederaufladbare (Sekundär-)Batterien Nickel-Cadmium- oder NiCd-Batterien bestehen aus einer vernickelten Kathode, einer cadmiumbeschichteten Anode und einer Kaliumhydroxid-Elektrode. Die positiven und negativen Platten, die durch den Separator vor Kurzschlüssen geschützt sind, werden zusammengerollt und in das Gehäuse gelegt. Durch dieses Design kann die NiCd-Zelle viel mehr Strom liefern als eine Alkalibatterie ähnlicher Größe. Die Reaktionen sind <img alt="Eq3" src="/files/ftp_upload/11439/11439_Equation_3.png" style="text-align: center; height: 130px;"> Bei richtiger Behandlung kann ein NiCd-Akku etwa 1000 Mal aufgeladen werden (E_cell ~ 1,3 V). Da Cadmium ein giftiges Schwermetall ist, sollten NiCd-Batterien niemals zerbrochen oder verbrannt werden und gemäß den einschlägigen Richtlinien für giftige Abfälle entsorgt werden. Lithium-Ionen-Batterien gehören zu den beliebtesten wiederaufladbaren Batterien und werden in vielen tragbaren elektronischen Geräten verwendet. Die Reaktionen sind <img alt="Eq4" src="/files/ftp_upload/11439/11439_Equation_4.png" style="text-align: center; height: 130px;"> Die variable Stöchiometrie der Zellreaktion führt zu Schwankungen der Zellspannungen, aber unter typischen Bedingungen beträgt x normalerweise nicht mehr als 0,5 und die Zellspannung beträgt etwa 3,7 V (E_cell ~ 3,7). Lithiumbatterien sind beliebt, weil sie viel Strom liefern können, leichter als vergleichbare Batterien anderer Typen sind, beim Entladen eine nahezu konstante Spannung erzeugen und bei Lagerung nur langsam ihre Ladung verlieren. Die Blei-Säure-Batterie ist auch eine Art Sekundärbatterie, die üblicherweise in Automobilen verwendet wird. Es ist kostengünstig und in der Lage, den hohen Strom zu erzeugen, der von Anlassermotoren für Autos benötigt wird. Die Reaktionen für eine Blei-Säure-Batterie sind <img alt="Eq5" src="/files/ftp_upload/11439/11439_Equation_5.png" style="text-align: center; height: 160px;"> Jede Zelle erzeugt 2 V (E_zelle ~ 2 V), daher werden sechs Zellen in Reihe geschaltet, um eine 12-V-Autobatterie zu erzeugen. Brennstoffzellen Eine Brennstoffzelle ist eine galvanische Zelle, die herkömmliche Brennstoffe verwendet, meist Wasserstoff oder Methan, die der Zelle zusammen mit einem Oxidationsmittel kontinuierlich zugeführt werden. Innerhalb der Zelle durchlaufen Brennstoff und Oxidationsmittel die gleiche Redoxchemie wie bei der Verbrennung, jedoch über eine katalysierte Elektrochemie, die deutlich effizienter ist. Beispielsweise verwendet eine typische Wasserstoff-Brennstoffzelle Graphitelektroden, in die Katalysatoren auf Platinbasis eingebettet sind, um die beiden Halbzellenreaktionen zu beschleunigen: <img alt="Eq6" src="/files/ftp_upload/11439/11439_Equation_6.png" style="text-align: center; height: 130px;"> Diese Brennstoffzellentypen erzeugen im Allgemeinen Spannungen von etwa 1,23 V (E_cell ~ 1,23 V). Im Vergleich zu einem Verbrennungsmotor ist die Energieeffizienz einer Brennstoffzelle, die dieselbe Redoxreaktion nutzt, typischerweise mehr als doppelt so hoch (~20–25 % für einen Motor gegenüber ~50–75 % für eine Brennstoffzelle). Batteries and fuel cells are galvanic cells that supply electrical power for many applications. They range from tiny button batteries in wristwatches to large systems that can provide backup energy to municipal power grids. Some are primary cells, which are single-use and cannot be recharged. Others are secondary cells, which use reversible reactions and can be charged again by an external power source.

A common primary battery is the dry cell. It uses zinc as both the container and the anode, or negative terminal, and a graphite rod as the cathode, or positive terminal. The zinc can holds an electrolyte paste with manganese(IV) oxide, zinc(II) chloride, ammonium chloride, and water. A dry cell has a voltage of about 1.5 V. It comes in sizes such as D, C, AA, and AAA. These sizes use the same parts and the same voltage, but larger cells contain more reactants and can transfer more charge. Dry cells can also be connected in series to increase voltage.

Alkaline batteries use the same redox couples as dry cells, but they use an alkaline electrolyte, often potassium hydroxide. They can deliver about three to five times the energy of a dry cell of similar size and have a cell potential of about 1.43 V. These batteries can leak potassium hydroxide, so they should be removed from devices during long-term storage. Some alkaline batteries are rechargeable, but most are not.

Rechargeable batteries include nickel-cadmium, or NiCd, batteries, lithium-ion batteries, and lead-acid batteries. A NiCd battery has a nickel-plated cathode, a cadmium-plated anode, and a potassium hydroxide electrode. The positive and negative plates are rolled together with a separator to keep them from shorting. This design lets a NiCd cell deliver much more current than a similar-sized alkaline battery. When treated properly, it can be recharged about 1000 times, and its cell potential is about 1.3 V. Cadmium is toxic, so NiCd batteries should not be ruptured or burned and must be disposed of as toxic waste.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in portable electronic devices. Their reaction has variable stoichiometry, so the voltage can vary, but under typical conditions the cell potential is about 3.7 V. These batteries are popular because they can provide a large amount of current, are lighter than comparable batteries of other types, and keep a nearly constant voltage as they discharge. They also lose charge slowly during storage. Lead-acid batteries are common in automobiles. They are inexpensive and can deliver the high current needed by starter motors. Each cell produces 2 V, so six cells are connected in series to make a 12-V car battery. These batteries are heavy and contain a caustic sulfuric acid electrolyte, and they also contain a significant amount of lead, so they must be disposed of properly.

A fuel cell is also a galvanic cell, but it uses a fuel that is continuously fed into the cell along with an oxidant. The fuel is often hydrogen or methane. Inside the cell, the same redox chemistry that occurs in combustion is carried out by a catalyzed electrochemical process that is much more efficient. A typical hydrogen fuel cell uses graphite electrodes with platinum-based catalysts to speed the half-cell reactions. These fuel cells usually produce about 1.23 V. Compared with an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell using the same redox reaction is typically more than twice as efficient. Hydrogen fuel cells are used on extended space missions, and prototypes for personal vehicles have been developed.
