Functional Groups

Funktionelle Gruppen sind kovalent gebundene Gruppen von Atomen, die die Eigenschaften eines Moleküls beeinflussen.
Moleküle, die die gleichen funktionellen Gruppen enthalten, weisen oft ähnliche Eigenschaften auf und gehen ähnliche Reaktionen ein.
Die Benennung funktioneller Gruppen ermöglicht die schnelle Identifizierung der Atome in einem Molekül, was in der organischen Chemie und Biochemie nützlich ist. 
Kohlenwasserstoffe sind die Basis organischer Moleküle und enthalten eine unterschiedliche Anzahl von Kohlenstoff- und Wasserstoffatomen. Dazu gehören Alkane, Alkene und Alkine. Kohlenstoffatome in Alkanen sind durch Einfachbindungen miteinander verbunden, während Alkene und Alkine Doppel- bzw. Dreifachbindungen enthalten.
Kohlenwasserstoffe können geschlossene Ringe bilden. Enthält der Ring nur Einfachbindungen, spricht man von einem Cycloalkan. Sind die Kohlenstoffe durch abwechselnde Einfach- und Doppelbindungen miteinander verbunden, spricht man von einem aromatischen Ring oder einer Arylgruppe.
Eine der einfachsten nicht kohlenstoffhaltigen Gruppen ist die Hydroxylgruppe, die ein Sauerstoffatom und ein Wasserstoffatom enthält. Es ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil mehrerer Verbindungen wie Methanol, Wasser und Kohlenhydrate.
Eine weitere Kategorie von funktionellen Gruppen sind die Carbonylgruppen, die einen Kohlenstoff und einen Sauerstoff enthalten, die durch eine Doppelbindung miteinander verbunden sind. Carbonyl-haltige Gruppen umfassen funktionelle Gruppen wie Aldehyde, Ketone, Ester und Carboxylgruppen.
Aldehyde haben Wasserstoff und eine variable oder R-Gruppe, die an ein Carbonyl gebunden ist, während Ketone zwei variable Gruppen haben. R-Gruppen repräsentieren oft Kohlenwasserstoffe, können aber auch andere Gruppen oder Atome sein.

Ester bestehen aus einer Carbonylgruppe, die von einer R-Gruppe und einem Sauerstoff flankiert wird, während Carbonsäuren oder Carboxylgruppen von einer R-Gruppe und einem Alkohol flankiert werden. Lipide enthalten Ester und Aminosäuren enthalten Carbonsäuren.
Aminosäuren haben auch eine andere gemeinsame funktionelle Gruppe, die als Amin- oder Aminogruppe bezeichnet wird. Ein Amin besteht aus einem Stickstoff mit einem einsamen Paar, das mit einer Kombination von Wasserstoffatomen und R-Gruppen verbunden ist. Aminosäuren sind die Bausteine von Proteinen. 
Eine Phosphatgruppe ist ein Phosphor, der an vier Sauerstoffe gebunden ist und häufig in der DNA, dem genetischen Material aller lebenden Organismen, vorkommt. Es kann auch an Proteine gebunden werden, um deren Funktion zu verändern.

Funktionelle Gruppen sind eine Gruppe von Atomen mit charakteristischen Eigenschaften, die, wenn sie mit dem Kohlenstoffgerüst eines Moleküls verbunden werden, die Eigenschaften dieses Moleküls verändern. Beispielsweise macht das Vorhandensein bestimmter funktioneller Gruppen an einem Molekül diese hydrophil, während andere sie hydrophob machen. Diese funktionellen Gruppen sind ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil der organischen Chemie und wichtige Bestandteile biologischer Moleküle wie Kohlenhydrate, Proteine, Lipide und Nukleinsäuren. Jede funktionelle Gruppe ist eine einzigartige Anordnung von Atomen und erhält einen Namen für die Kombination von Atomen, aus denen die Gruppe besteht. Kohlenwasserstoffe Durch starke, stabile Bindungen zwischen Kohlenstoffatomen entstehen komplexe Moleküle mit Ketten, Verzweigungen und Ringen. Die Chemie dieser Verbindungen wird organische Chemie genannt. Kohlenwasserstoffe sind organische Verbindungen, die nur aus Kohlenstoff und Wasserstoff bestehen. Die Alkane sind gesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe, also Kohlenwasserstoffe, die nur Einfachbindungen enthalten. Alkene enthalten eine oder mehrere Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Doppelbindungen. Alkine enthalten eine oder mehrere Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Dreifachbindungen. Aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe enthalten Ringstrukturen. Sie werden auch als Arylgruppen bezeichnet. Alkohole und Ether Viele organische Verbindungen, die keine Kohlenwasserstoffe sind, können als Derivate von Kohlenwasserstoffen betrachtet werden. Ein Kohlenwasserstoffderivat kann gebildet werden, indem ein oder mehrere Wasserstoffatome eines Kohlenwasserstoffs durch eine funktionelle Gruppe ersetzt werden, die mindestens ein Atom eines anderen Elements als Kohlenstoff oder Wasserstoff enthält. Die Eigenschaften von Kohlenwasserstoffderivaten werden maßgeblich durch die funktionelle Gruppe bestimmt. Die OH-Gruppe, auch Hydroxylgruppe genannt, ist die funktionelle Gruppe eines Alkohols. Die –R–O–R–-Gruppe ist die funktionelle Gruppe eines Ethers. Aldehyde, Ketone, Carbonsäuren und Ester Zu den mit der Carbonylgruppe verwandten funktionellen Gruppen gehören die –CHO-Gruppe eines Aldehyds, die –CO–Gruppe eines Ketons, die –COOH-Gruppe einer Carbonsäure und die –COOR-Gruppe eines Esters. Die Carbonylgruppe, eine Kohlenstoff-Sauerstoff-Doppelbindung, ist die Schlüsselstruktur in diesen Klassen organischer Moleküle: Aldehyde enthalten mindestens ein Wasserstoffatom, das an das Carbonylkohlenstoffatom gebunden ist, Ketone enthalten zwei Kohlenstoffgruppen, die an das Carbonylkohlenstoffatom gebunden sind, Carbonsäuren enthalten eine Hydroxylgruppe, die an das Carbonylkohlenstoffatom gebunden ist, und Ester enthalten ein Sauerstoffatom, das an eine andere Kohlenstoffgruppe gebunden ist, die mit dem Carbonylkohlenstoffatom verbunden ist. Alle diese Verbindungen enthalten oxidierte Kohlenstoffatome im Verhältnis zum Kohlenstoffatom einer Alkoholgruppe. Amine Die Zugabe von Stickstoff in ein organisches Gerüst führt zu zwei Molekülfamilien. Functional groups are the parts of organic molecules that give them specific chemical behavior. They help determine how a compound reacts and what properties it has. In organic chemistry, these groups are used to classify molecules in a clear way.

Hydrocarbons are one common class of organic compounds. They contain only carbon and hydrogen. Alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones are other classes that are identified by their functional groups. These groups make each class behave differently from the others.

Knowing functional groups helps students recognize related compounds and compare their structures. It also provides a simple way to organize many organic molecules into meaningful groups. That makes functional groups an important part of high school chemistry.
